Three individuals have been charged in connection with the death of former One Direction star Liam Payne, according to Argentinian authorities. Payne, 31, tragically died on October 16 after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires.
Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that one person, who had been with Payne at the time, is facing charges of “abandonment of a person followed by death.” A hotel employee and another individual have also been charged with supplying drugs. The identities of the suspects have not been revealed.
Liam Payne, a father and a widely known pop star, rose to fame as a member of One Direction following his appearance on The X Factor in 2010. He went on to enjoy a successful solo career but sadly passed away under mysterious circumstances in Buenos Aires.
Following Payne’s death, Argentinian authorities launched an investigation into his final days at the CasaSur Hotel, where the tragic incident occurred. Police discovered substances in Payne’s hotel room, along with broken furniture and other damaged items. Earlier reports indicated that hotel staff had made multiple emergency calls, stating that Payne was intoxicated and had been “trash[ing] the entire room” due to excessive consumption of drugs and alcohol.
On Thursday, the public prosecutor’s office released the results of a toxicology report, revealing traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s system. A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as “multiple trauma” and “internal and external hemorrhaging,” which resulted from the fall. Medical reports suggested that Payne may have fallen while semi-conscious or completely unconscious, ruling out the possibility that he jumped or intentionally caused his own death.
Authorities have also conducted multiple raids in Buenos Aires, searching several properties as part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators are focusing on the contents of Payne’s broken laptop and other electronic devices that were seized from the hotel room. In addition, over 800 hours of security footage from hotel cameras and public streets have been reviewed, and authorities have received numerous testimonies from hotel staff, family members, friends, and medical professionals.
Following the investigation, Payne’s body was returned to his family and was flown back to the UK for funeral arrangements. Tributes have poured in from around the world following his death, including heartfelt messages from his former partner, Cheryl, as well as his One Direction bandmates and music industry figures like Simon Cowell.
One Direction members Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles issued a joint statement expressing their devastation, saying they were “completely devastated” by the loss. They described Payne as someone they would “miss terribly” and said that the “memories we shared with him will be treasured forever.”
In addition to tributes from his family and bandmates, thousands of fans gathered in the UK and across the globe to hold memorials for the late singer, honoring his life and legacy. The outpouring of love from his supporters serves as a testament to the impact he had on millions of fans worldwide.
As the investigation into his death continues, the focus remains on determining the full circumstances surrounding his final hours. Authorities in Argentina are committed to piecing together the events leading up to the tragic fall, as they continue to examine the evidence and statements from those involved. The case has left many questions unanswered, but it is clear that Payne’s death has left a profound mark on the music world and beyond.
