Ukrainian Forces Penetrate Russian Territory Amid Escalating Conflict

2 min read

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that Ukrainian troops have conducted a significant cross-border operation into Russia’s Kursk region. In a recent video address, Zelensky acknowledged the operation, marking the first time Ukraine has openly admitted to fighting inside Russian territory. This incursion, which began on Tuesday, represents the deepest Ukrainian raid since Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Zelensky’s statement highlighted that Ukrainian forces advanced more than 10 kilometers (approximately six miles) into Russia, shifting the conflict directly onto “the aggressor’s territory.” This operation follows a surprise attack, and Zelensky expressed gratitude towards Ukrainian soldiers while underscoring their role in exerting pressure on Russia and restoring justice.

In response to the incursion, Russia has faced considerable challenges. The Kursk region has seen the evacuation of over 76,000 residents, and a “counter-terror” regime has been implemented in Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk regions. This regime includes restrictions on movement, vehicle use, and phone tapping to manage the crisis. Reports indicate that the fighting continues, with Kursk Governor Aleksei Smirnov noting injuries from a Ukrainian attack, including a missile strike that hit a residential building in Kursk city.

Meanwhile, Russian regions bordering Ukraine, including Voronezh and Belgorod, also experienced Ukrainian drone attacks, though no injuries were reported. In Ukraine, the Kyiv region faced retaliation as a rocket fragment fell on residential houses, resulting in the deaths of a 35-year-old man and his four-year-old son, with three additional individuals wounded.

The Ukrainian incursion involved up to 1,000 troops, supported by tanks and armored vehicles, penetrating the Kursk region. Ukrainian forces have reportedly captured several villages and are threatening the regional town of Sudzha. A recent video purportedly shows Ukrainian soldiers claiming control over Sudzha and a Gazprom gas facility near the town, although this claim has not been fully verified. Russian military bloggers suggest that the town remains under Russian control.

Footage has also surfaced showing a damaged and abandoned Russian convoy near the town of Oktyabrskoe, with some Russian soldiers either injured or deceased. In response, Russia has deployed reinforcements, including tanks and rocket-launcher systems, to counter the Ukrainian offensive, though these claims have not been independently confirmed.

Amid escalating tensions, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for restraint from both sides as the conflict edges closer to the Kursk nuclear power plant, one of Russia’s largest nuclear facilities. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi emphasized the need for measures to prevent a potential nuclear accident that could have severe radiological consequences. The power plant is situated about 60 kilometers northeast of Sudzha.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing military engagements and heightened international concern over the potential for further escalation.
