A British man, identified as James Scott Rhys Anderson, has been captured by Russian forces while fighting for Ukraine, according to various reports. In a video that has circulated online, the 22-year-old, wearing military clothing, introduces himself as Anderson, stating that he previously served in the British Army.
Russian state news agency Tass reported that Anderson, referred to as a “UK mercenary,” was captured in the Kursk region of Russia, an area Ukraine has held since launching a surprise offensive in August. The Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, confirmed that the British government was aware of the situation and was doing everything possible to support Anderson, his family, and ensure his safety.
Anderson’s father, Scott Anderson, expressed his deep concern for his son. “I begged him not to go to Ukraine,” he said. “He wanted to help, thinking it was the right thing to do.” His father explained that James had been motivated by a sense of duty and moral obligation, but he feared his son would be used as a bargaining chip. “James told me they torture their prisoners, and I’m terrified that he’ll be tortured,” Scott Anderson said. The father further revealed that he had received the video of his son’s capture from his commander and described the moment as “a complete shock,” adding that his son appeared “frightened, scared, and worried” in the footage.
In the video, which was initially posted on Telegram, Anderson explains that he served as a private in the British Army from 2019 to 2023 before joining Ukraine’s International Legion—a unit comprised of foreign volunteers fighting alongside Ukrainian forces. Anderson reveals that he had traveled from the UK to Poland and then to the Ukrainian border after losing his job and being moved by the news coverage of the war in Ukraine.
