3 min read

Olivia Hussey, the actress best known for her iconic portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film Romeo and Juliet, has passed away at the age of 73. The Argentinian-born actress, who spent much of her childhood in London, died on Friday surrounded by her family and loved ones. Her death was confirmed through a statement shared on her Instagram, which reflected both the sadness of the loss and the enduring legacy Hussey left in the film industry.

Hussey’s role as Juliet, which she played at the age of 15, catapulted her to international fame. She won a Golden Globe for Best New Actress for her performance and became an iconic figure in film history. However, her career was not without its controversies. Decades later, Hussey, along with her Romeo and Juliet co-star Leonard Whiting, filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures, alleging that they had been coerced into performing nude scenes during the filming, despite prior assurances that they would not have to. This legal battle, which claimed damages of over $500 million, drew attention to the exploitation of young actors in the industry. Although the lawsuit was dismissed in 2023, with a judge ruling that the scene was not sexually suggestive enough to warrant legal action, Hussey’s courage in speaking out about her experience left a significant mark on the conversation around actor safety and consent in Hollywood.

Beyond Romeo and Juliet, Hussey’s most notable role was playing Mary, the mother of Jesus, in the 1977 television miniseries Jesus of Nazareth. This portrayal was widely acclaimed, further cementing her place in the public’s heart. She later took on various roles in films and television, including the 1978 adaptation of Death on the Nile and Black Christmas (1974), a slasher film in which she earned recognition as a “scream queen.” Hussey also starred in Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990), playing the role of Norman Bates’s mother in a prequel to Psycho. These roles allowed her to stretch her talents in multiple genres and prove her versatility as an actress.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1951, Hussey moved to London at the age of seven. She attended the prestigious Italia Conti Academy, where she honed her craft and eventually began her acting career. It was while performing on stage in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, alongside Vanessa Redgrave, that she was discovered by director Franco Zeffirelli. Zeffirelli was searching for a young actress to portray Juliet in what would become his definitive adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic play. At just 15 years old, Hussey was cast as Juliet opposite Leonard Whiting, who played Romeo. Their performances in the film earned widespread acclaim, and Romeo and Juliet became a box office success, eventually receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture and Best Director. Although Hussey did not receive an Oscar nomination, she won the Golden Globe for Best New Star, marking the beginning of a promising career.

In addition to her acting career, Hussey also lent her voice to several video games, showcasing her talents in a new medium. Over the years, she remained a respected figure in the entertainment industry, continuing to work both on-screen and in voice acting. Her final film role was in the 2015 British film Social Suicide, a modern reimagining of Romeo and Juliet set in the social media era, where she reunited with Leonard Whiting.

Despite the challenges she faced, including the legal battle over the Romeo and Juliet nude scene, Hussey’s impact on the film industry remains undeniable. She was a trailblazer, both as an actress and as an advocate for actor rights. Her ability to portray complex characters with depth and emotion left a lasting impression on audiences around the world. In addition to her acting, Hussey’s legacy will also include her role in helping bring attention to important conversations about consent, exploitation, and the treatment of young actors in the entertainment industry.

Hussey’s passing marks the end of an era for fans who admired her for her groundbreaking work in Romeo and Juliet and beyond. As the statement shared on her Instagram read, “As we grieve this immense loss, we also celebrate Olivia’s enduring impact on our lives and the industry.” Her contributions to film and her courage in confronting difficult issues will continue to inspire future generations of actors and filmmakers.
