Newly released pictures show Joe Biden meeting Hunter Biden’s Chinese business partners
3 min readNewly released photographs have revealed Joe Biden meeting with some of his son Hunter Biden’s Chinese business associates during a 2013 visit to China. These images, made public for the first time through a public records request by a pro-Trump legal group, show both Bidens interacting with prominent figures, including Hunter’s Chinese business partners.
The photographs, obtained from the National Archives and Records Administration, depict meetings from an official trip to China when Joe Biden was vice president. One set shows Hunter and his father conversing with Xi Jinping, the Chinese president at the time. Another set features Joe Biden introducing Hunter to Li Yuanchao, who served as China’s vice president during that period. A third group of images shows Hunter Biden introducing his father to Chinese business partners, including executives from the private equity firm BHR Partners. The photos capture handshakes and group poses, further highlighting the familial and business connections.
These images are significant because they challenge previous claims made by Joe Biden, who consistently asserted that he had no business-related interactions with his son. The photos contradict the narrative, adding weight to the ongoing Republican-led impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden. This inquiry has revealed more than two dozen instances where Joe Biden interacted with Hunter’s international business partners from China and other countries. However, both Hunter Biden and his associates have maintained that while these interactions included meetings, phone calls, and dinners, no substantial business discussions took place. A key figure in Hunter’s U.S. business dealings later testified that the relationship was more about creating an “illusion” of access to his father rather than engaging in meaningful exchanges.
Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, dismissed the significance of the new photos, stating that they align with Hunter’s testimony in February, where he described the public event he attended in China. Lowell criticized the release of the images, accusing Trump-aligned groups of using them to fuel unfounded conspiracy theories. “There is simply nothing new here,” he said, adding that these attacks are merely part of a “misinformation spin” from Republicans who cannot let go of their baseless accusations.
The photos were requested by America First Legal, a conservative legal group led by Stephen Miller, who was a senior adviser to former President Donald Trump. The group filed a public records request in 2022 and later sued the National Archives to obtain the images. America First Legal has claimed that these photos support the House Oversight Committee’s findings, which suggest that Hunter Biden facilitated meetings for his father with Jonathan Li and other executives from BHR Partners during the 2013 trip. The group alleges that these interactions helped Hunter Biden leverage his father’s political influence for private gain.
In response to the release of the images, a White House spokesperson emphasized that the trip occurred over a decade ago and that House Republicans had already spent significant time and resources investigating the matter, concluding that Joe Biden was not involved in his son’s business dealings. “It’s past time to call it a day,” the spokesperson said.
Hunter Biden’s international business dealings have been a point of contention for Republicans and federal investigators. Although he faced scrutiny over his tax affairs stemming from these overseas ventures, he was never accused of engaging in illegal lobbying or corruption. Recently, Hunter Biden faced charges for tax crimes, partially related to unpaid taxes on his foreign earnings. Despite the controversies, he was pardoned by his father, President Joe Biden, in a post-election move, covering both his past convictions and any future crimes that may arise from his business dealings between 2014 and 2024.
The release of these images, coupled with the ongoing investigations, continues to fuel partisan debates over the Biden family’s involvement in international business affairs. Michael Ding, counsel for America First Legal, expressed concern that even after the pardon, evidence continues to surface, showing how the Biden family allegedly leveraged Joe Biden’s extensive public service career for personal gain.
