Preview of the 2024 Democratic National Convention

2 min read

As the 2024 election nears, Chicago is set to host the Democratic National Convention (DNC) from August 19 to August 22. This gathering, which dates back to the 1830s when Democratic delegates first convened in Baltimore to support President Andrew Jackson, will continue many of its traditional elements despite some notable changes this year.

Convention Focus

This year’s DNC will take place at the United Center Arena, marking a shift from past conventions. The Democratic Party has already nominated Vice President Kamala Harris through a virtual roll call, following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Consequently, the convention will not focus on nominating candidates but will instead spotlight speeches from key Democratic figures and the finalization of the party’s platform.

The platform draft, already released, addresses a range of issues such as inflation, climate change, and gun violence. The Democrats’ platform will contrast their positions with Project 2025, a conservative plan for a potential second Trump term developed by the Heritage Foundation, despite Trump’s efforts to distance himself from it.

Key Speakers

The convention will feature a lineup of prominent Democrats and celebrities. President Biden will open the convention on Monday evening, followed by First Lady Jill Biden, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, and other party leaders. On Tuesday, former President Barack Obama will speak, alongside Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.

Wednesday will showcase former President Bill Clinton and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, among others. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who is Kamala Harris’s running mate, will deliver a key speech that night following his nomination.

The convention’s highlight will occur on Thursday, when Vice President Harris will accept the presidential nomination and deliver a speech titled “For the Future.” Other notable speakers will include former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Additionally, everyday Americans, including Trump voters, will also share their perspectives.

Attendance and Media

Approximately 50,000 attendees are expected, including delegates, super delegates, major Democratic figures, and media representatives. The event will feature numerous celebrities, although it remains unconfirmed whether stars like Beyoncé or Taylor Swift will attend.

Outside the venue, protests are anticipated, particularly regarding U.S. support for Israel’s actions in Gaza. Organizers predict that up to 10,000 people may demonstrate, with ongoing disputes about protest locations in Chicago.

Viewing Options

The public cannot attend the convention in person unless they are volunteers. However, extensive media coverage will be available through major TV networks and C-SPAN. For the first time, the convention will also stream live on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, providing viewers with new ways to follow the events on their phones.

Overall, the 2024 Democratic National Convention promises to be a significant event with a blend of traditional elements and new approaches, setting the stage for the upcoming presidential election.
