The inaugural Dola Super Cup Coast Region Tournament concluded with thrilling action at the Mombasa Sports Club over the weekend, celebrating the best football talent from Kenya’s coastal counties. In a highly anticipated final, Kilifi emerged as the champions, defeating Mombasa A in a dramatic penalty shootout.
The championship match between Kilifi and Mombasa A was a gripping affair, showcasing the skill and determination of both teams. The game ended in a 1-1 draw after regular time, leading to a penalty shootout to determine the winner. Kilifi demonstrated remarkable composure and precision under pressure, ultimately securing a 4-3 victory in the shootout to claim the title and a grand prize of one million shillings.
Kilifi’s captain, Michael Haro, expressed his joy and pride in the team’s achievement. “We are thrilled with our victory and being crowned the Coast region champions,” Haro said. “It was a tense and tough game, and Mombasa A was a formidable opponent. We gave it our all, and we are proud to return to Kilifi as champions.”
The tournament not only highlighted top football talent but also served as a unifying event for coastal communities, providing young players with a platform to showcase their skills and advance their development.
Mombasa A, the runners-up, received 500,000 shillings, while Mombasa B, who finished in third place, earned 250,000 shillings. Kwale, taking fourth place, was awarded 100,000 shillings.
Kilifi’s exemplary conduct on and off the field earned them the title of Most Disciplined Team, accompanied by a 100,000 shilling cash prize. Ibrahim Chama, a 14-year-old from Tana River, was named the Best Upcoming Talent of the tournament, reflecting the promise and potential of emerging young players. Burhani Mahadhi, Kilifi’s manager, received the Best Manager Award for his strategic leadership throughout the competition.
Said Wagiri, the goalkeeper for Mombasa A and SS Assad in the National Super League (NSL), was honored as the Best Goalkeeper for his outstanding performance and crucial saves. Salmon Otieno from Mombasa B was recognized as the tournament’s top scorer, netting nine goals. Kilifi’s Bernard Feisal was voted the Best Player of the tournament, with each award winner receiving a cash prize of 50,000 shillings.
The tournament’s semi-final matches set the stage for the final showdown. On Friday, Kilifi faced Kwale B, securing a narrow 1-0 victory to advance to the final. The following day saw a thrilling semi-final between local rivals Mombasa B and Mombasa A. The match ended in a 1-1 draw after regular time, and Mombasa A triumphed 4-2 in the penalty shootout, earning their place in the final.
The third-place match, held before the final on Sunday, featured Mombasa B against Kwale B. The game was closely contested, ending 1-1 after regular time. Mombasa B emerged victorious 3-1 in the penalty shootout, securing third place in the tournament.
