Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan dies

Rich Homie Quan, a prominent figure in the rap scene, has died, according to confirmation from authorities on Thursday. The artist, known legally as Dequantes Devontay Lamar, was in his early 30s and passed away in Atlanta, Georgia. The Fulton County Medical Examiner has reported the death, but the cause remains undisclosed, with an autopsy scheduled for Friday.

Rich Homie Quan rose to fame in the mid-2010s, establishing himself as one of Atlanta’s most notable modern rappers. He achieved mainstream success with his 2013 hit single “Type of Way,” and continued to make waves in the industry with the 2015 track “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).” His work earned him several nominations for BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including Best New Artist and the People’s Champ Award.

Throughout his career, Quan collaborated with several high-profile artists such as 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane, and Trinidad James, further solidifying his presence in the music industry.

Born in October 1989, Rich Homie Quan was the eldest of three siblings and was raised by a single mother, as reported by Atlanta’s Masquerade venue. Initially aspiring to be a baseball player, Quan eventually turned to music. He was open about his challenging early years, including a 15-month stint in jail in 2011 due to his involvement in a series of burglaries. After his release, he focused intensely on his music career, leading to his rise as a prominent figure in rap.

Since news of his passing, tributes have been pouring in from across the music world. R&B singer Jacquees was among the first to express his condolences, writing on X: “Rest in Peace my brother Rich Homie Quan. I love you for life.” He later referred to Quan as a “legend” in a subsequent post.

2 Chainz also shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, reflecting on their recent conversation about filming a video together. He wrote, “Dam lil brother, we just spoke about shooting a video, special prayer for you and your family, and pray for any and everybody that’s dealing with something my condolences bru.”

Rapper Quavo added his own message on Instagram, sharing an image of himself alongside Rich Homie Quan and other artists. He captioned the photo: “May God be with us, never saw this being apart of our journey.”

Alex Tumay, an engineer who worked with Quan over the years, expressed his grief, stating, “One of the nicest people I ever worked with and a true artist. Absolutely crushing news. RIP.”

Rich Homie Quan’s death marks a significant loss to the rap community, leaving behind a legacy that influenced many within the industry. His contributions to music and his personal story of overcoming adversity will be remembered by fans and fellow artists alike.
