Ali Bastian Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis

3 min read

Ali Bastian, known for her role in Hollyoaks from 2001 to 2007, has shared the news of her breast cancer diagnosis. The 42-year-old actress was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer after discovering a lump while breastfeeding her youngest child. Speaking with OK! Magazine, Bastian described the diagnosis as “a total shock.”

Bastian initially suspected she had a blocked milk duct but sought medical attention when antibiotics failed to resolve the issue. Her concerns grew as the lump persisted and seemed more significant than a simple blockage. She decided to visit a breast clinic, where her diagnosis was confirmed.

Currently residing in Ireland with her husband, David O’Mahony, and their two children—Isabella, 19 months, and Isla, four—Bastian is undergoing a comprehensive treatment plan. Her treatment includes chemotherapy, a single mastectomy, and radiotherapy. Despite the challenges, Bastian remains hopeful and is receiving support from a psychologist who specializes in oncology.

In her conversation with the magazine, Bastian mentioned how the diagnosis has affected her emotionally. “There are mornings when I wake up and momentarily forget about it, but then it hits me again,” she said. “I’m still trying to process everything.” The actress has shared an age-appropriate version of her diagnosis with her daughter, explaining that she needs to take strong medication that might make her tired and result in a temporary change in her appearance due to hair loss.

Bastian expressed her desire to return to acting despite her current health battles. She revealed that after her diagnosis, seeing a post from her former The Bill co-star Dominic Power on the set of Hollyoaks ignited a strong yearning to act again. “I miss looking into an actor’s eyes and performing scenes,” she admitted.

Louise Grimsdell, a senior clinical nurse specialist at Breast Cancer Now, noted that while breast cancer in younger women is less common, approximately 5,000 women under 45 are diagnosed annually in the UK. She emphasized the importance of being vigilant about breast health at all stages of life and extended her best wishes to Bastian for her treatment. “It’s crucial to be aware of any new or unusual changes in your breasts, especially during and after pregnancy,” Grimsdell advised. “If you notice any changes, consult with your GP, midwife, or health visitor.”

Understanding how to check for breast cancer symptoms is vital. The most common early sign is a lump or an area of thickened tissue in the breast. While not all lumps are cancerous, it is essential to seek medical advice for any new or concerning changes. Symptoms to watch for include:

  • A new lump or thickened area in either breast
  • Alterations in the size or shape of one or both breasts
  • Discharge of fluid from the nipple
  • Swelling or lumps in the armpits
  • Changes in the skin of the breast, such as puckering, dimpling, rash, or redness
  • A rash, crusting, or itchiness on or around the nipple
  • Changes in nipple appearance, such as inversion into the breast

Bastian’s story underscores the importance of early detection and awareness in managing breast cancer. Her journey highlights the need for ongoing vigilance and the impact of support from medical professionals and loved ones during such challenging times.
