Ohemaa Mercy Discusses Divine Approval for Her Divorce

3 min read

Ghanaian gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy has recently revealed in an interview that she sought divine guidance before deciding to divorce her former husband, Isaac Twum-Ampofo. The renowned singer shared her experience during a conversation on TV3, explaining how her spiritual journey played a crucial role in her decision-making process.

In the interview, Ohemaa Mercy detailed the intense period of reflection and prayer that led to her decision. She recounted that amidst the difficulties she faced in her marriage, she dedicated herself to seeking God’s direction. This period of spiritual seeking lasted for three months during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Ohemaa, it was during this time that she fervently prayed and sought confirmation from God regarding her troubled marriage.

“I remember when I was going through divorce, especially during COVID-19, I solely depended on God for direction,” she said. “I had a strong covenant with Him and spent significant time in prayer, going to the mountains to seek His guidance. After praying for three months, I received a clear message from God. With that confirmation, I took the bold step to proceed with the divorce. If I hadn’t received this confirmation, I would not have gone through with it.”

The gospel artist also expressed that her relationship with God has become more profound since her divorce. She emphasized that despite the separation, she has experienced an even stronger presence of God in her life compared to when she was married.

“I give God the glory because, although I am divorced, I have felt His hand on my life more strongly now than when I was married,” she stated. “This period has brought me closer to God, and I am grateful for the support and guidance I continue to receive.”

Ohemaa further explained that her decision to divorce was not made in isolation. She discussed the matter with her ex-husband, and they both agreed that a separation was necessary. She described their conversation, noting that her former husband was understanding and supportive of her decision to focus more on her ministry.

“When I spoke to my partner about the divorce, he understood our need for a break and the importance of seeking divine intervention. I expressed my desire for us to take a step back, focus on our individual responsibilities, and continue supporting each other, especially in terms of our ministry and caring for our children. I wanted to ensure that I was not failing in my spiritual obligations,” she said.

Her comments have sparked discussions among social media users and religious circles. Some critics have pointed out that her reasoning appears to contradict Biblical teachings on marriage and divorce. They reference scriptures such as Malachi 2:16, where God states, “I hate divorce,” and Matthew 19:6, which emphasizes that what God has joined together should not be separated.

Despite the controversy, Ohemaa Mercy’s disclosure comes at a time when she has been actively involved in her ministry and recently hosted her annual Tehillah Experience event on September 8, 2024. She had previously been silent about her divorce, even though rumors had circulated within the music industry.

Ohemaa Mercy’s account sheds light on her personal and spiritual journey during a challenging period in her life. Her emphasis on divine confirmation and the role of prayer in her decision-making process highlights her commitment to aligning her actions with her faith.
