3 min read

Jamie Theakston, the co-host of Heart Radio’s Breakfast Show, has announced that he has been diagnosed with stage one laryngeal cancer. Theakston, who is 53, revealed that he recently underwent surgery to remove a lesion from his vocal cords and expressed a positive outlook on his recovery. He shared that the cancer was detected through a biopsy and reassured his audience with an optimistic prognosis.

In a heartfelt statement, Theakston conveyed his determination to face the diagnosis with resilience. “So – I have cancer – but cancer doesn’t have me,” he said. He expressed hope that he would return to the show by October and mentioned that he has been advised to rest his voice in the meantime. During his absence, his colleagues JK (Jason King) and Amanda Holden will be taking over his duties. Theakston thanked them and the Global family for their overwhelming support. “Be thankful for this day, and when I next see you, I’ve got a great story to tell … Jamie x,” he added.

Heart Radio showed their support for Theakston on Instagram, referring to him as “our beloved Jamie.” Amanda Holden, his current co-host, reassured listeners that despite the diagnosis, the news was not entirely negative. She emphasized the positive prognosis and the strong team supporting Theakston’s treatment. JK, who usually hosts the Drivetime show with Kelly Brook, also shared confidence in Theakston’s recovery, stating, “The prognosis is very positive, and Jamie has an amazing team who are going to get this sorted. He’s going to be okay. He’s hoping to be back with us very soon.”

Holden conveyed that Theakston had encouraged them to keep the show running smoothly in his absence. “We are going to do him proud, him and Sophie [his wife] and the boys, they’re listening at home, and I know that after this announcement, all of you listening as well are going to be sending your best wishes to our king. Our lovely Jamie, who is going to be better and back with us very soon.”

Theakston’s announcement has prompted an outpouring of support from celebrities and fans alike. Singer Olly Murs sent his well wishes, writing, “Theakoo! Big love to you mate! Get well soon mate!” Chef Jamie Oliver also offered his encouragement with, “Big love brother you got this sending love xxx.” Emma Bunton, who previously co-hosted the Heart breakfast show with Theakston, simply wrote, “Love you to bits.” Other messages of support came from comedians Sarah Millican and Leigh Francis, as well as presenters Mark Wright, Jenni Falconer, Lisa Snowden, and Natalie Appleton of All Saints.

Jamie Theakston initially gained fame as a TV presenter in the 1990s with shows like BBC’s The Ozone, Live & Kicking alongside Zoe Ball, and Top of the Pops. He also hosted A Question of Pop and Channel 4’s The Priory. In the early 2000s, he presented The Games and later joined Zoe Ball for Britain’s Best Brain in 2009. Since 2005, Theakston has been a prominent figure on Heart Radio’s flagship breakfast show, first alongside Harriet Scott and, from 2019, with Amanda Holden.

Understanding Laryngeal Cancer

Laryngeal cancer affects the larynx, or voice box, which is located at the entrance of the windpipe and is crucial for breathing and speaking. In the UK, over 2,000 new cases are reported annually. It predominantly affects individuals over 60 years old and is more common in men. Treatment options typically include radiotherapy, surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted cancer medications.

Symptoms of laryngeal cancer can include:

  • A hoarse voice or changes in vocal quality
  • Pain or difficulty swallowing
  • A lump or swelling in the neck
  • A persistent cough or breathlessness
  • A chronic sore throat or earache
  • High-pitched wheezing during breathing
  • In severe cases, difficulty breathing

Early detection and treatment are vital for managing this condition effectively.
