A devastating mass shooting in Lusikisiki, a remote town in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, has claimed the lives of 17 individuals, prompting an urgent manhunt for the assailants, according to police reports.
The attack targeted two homesteads in the town, where a total of 12 women and one man were killed at one location, and three women and one man at another. Additionally, an 18th victim remains in critical condition in a local hospital.
Senzo Mchunu, South Africa’s police minister, is expected to visit Lusikisiki to address the situation. Local media reports indicate that many victims were relatives and neighbors in Nyathi village, Ngobozana, gathered to prepare for a traditional mourning ceremony commemorating a mother and daughter who were murdered a year ago. The group was reportedly packing goods and presents, including furniture, when the attack occurred on Friday night.
Local officials, including Ingquza Hill mayor Nonkosi Pepping, described the scene as one of terror. “The gunmen came and shot randomly,” she stated, highlighting the profound impact this tragedy has had on the community.
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, spokesperson for the South African Police Service, informed Newzroom Afrika that 19 people were present at one of the shooting locations, with six survivors emerging from one homestead: four women, a man, and a two-month-old baby, who was unharmed but taken to the hospital as a precaution. Unfortunately, there were no survivors at the other homestead.
The motives behind this horrific attack remain unclear, and no arrests have yet been made. Brigadier Mathe assured the public that a dedicated team of detectives is already on-site and that experts from Pretoria are en route to Lusikisiki to gather evidence and work towards apprehending those responsible for this heinous crime.
Xolile Nqatha, the cabinet member for community safety, expressed hope for the recovery of the critically injured victim, as his insights could provide crucial information about the shooting. Nqatha suggested that the attackers may have had prior connections to the victims, which could play a significant role in the investigation.
South Africa continues to grapple with alarming rates of violent crime, with recent statistics indicating it has one of the highest murder rates in the world. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime reported over 27,000 murders in the country in 2022, resulting in a staggering rate of 45 per 100,000 residents in a nation of nearly 60 million. For context, the murder rate in the United States stands at about six per 100,000.
This tragic incident has left the Lusikisiki community in shock, as residents come to terms with the loss of life and the senseless violence that has disrupted their lives. Local leaders are calling for unity and support for the victims’ families during this difficult time.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. The community is rallying together, hoping for answers and justice for those who lost their lives in this horrific act of violence.
