In an interview promoting his upcoming memoir, Never: The Autobiography, Astley reflected on how these early family struggles shaped his identity and choices. He stated, “I think it did form me as a person, definitely, and shaped many of my decisions about going into music and seeking the spotlight. I didn’t feel I received enough attention from my parents, which drove my desire to perform and connect with others.”

Astley, hailing from Newton-le-Willows, achieved fame at just 21 with his iconic hit, “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The song not only topped charts globally but also became a defining anthem of the 1980s. His debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody, sold over five million copies, cementing his place in pop history.

However, despite his early success, Astley chose to step away from the music industry a few years later, a decision deeply influenced by his own experience of becoming a parent. “Even though I was having an amazing career and was fortunate to enjoy so many incredible moments, after four or five years, I felt I had enough. Becoming a parent solidified that feeling for me,” he explained during his conversation with BBC North West Tonight.

Reflecting on his transition from stardom to parenthood, Astley humorously remarked that his life felt “all downhill” after his initial rise to fame. “I didn’t really experience the typical growth phases that many do—like going to university or starting first jobs. I missed out on discovering what I truly liked and who I was,” he noted.

In recent years, the resurgence of Astley’s fame can be attributed to the viral phenomenon of Rickrolling, where people are tricked into clicking links that lead to the music video for “Never Gonna Give You Up.” This trend has introduced his music to a new generation, revitalizing his connection with fans.

Despite this renewed attention, Astley maintains that fame does not dominate his everyday life. “It’s a lovely thing that kind of floats through my life but doesn’t overshadow it,” he remarked. This perspective allows him to enjoy his legacy while focusing on his personal life and family.
