Blakk Rasta’s Salaga Soljah Album for Grammy Consideration; A Milestone for African Reggae

1 min read

As the first round of voting for the 67th Grammy Awards gets underway, Ghanaian artiste Blakk Rasta has put his album Salaga Soljah into consideration for the highly coveted Best Reggae Album category. This puts this album at such a very critical moment, given that Salaga Soljah is going to be the only African album contesting the over-75 entries in that category in African Reggae.

With Blakk Rasta’s submission, he is touted for some significant acts like Vybz Kartel’s Party With Me, The Wailers’ Evolution, and UB40’s UB45 among the popular compilations like Jamaica Festival Song 2024 Competition and Celebrating Jamaica 62. His inclusion into this list can again show how vast-reaching the genre has been across the world, which had its roots in Jamaica, building a stronghold, especially in Africa, where messages of resistance, unity, and spirituality are always welcome.

The category by the Recording Academy was instituted to recognize an album of the year in one or more of several reggae subgenres such as roots reggae, dancehall, and ska. Albums in this category must comprise at least 75% playing time of new reggae recordings; featured artists, producers, and engineers are considered if they contribute more than 50% of playing time.
