Liam Payne died Wednesday at age 31.

Liam Payne, the beloved former member of the iconic boyband One Direction, has tragically passed away at the age of 31 after reportedly falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Local police confirmed the details of his death, which occurred on Wednesday in the Palermo neighborhood of the city.

According to a police statement provided to CNN, officers from the 14B Police Station responded to a 911 call reporting an aggressive individual who appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Although the police did not officially identify the individual in their statement, it has since been confirmed that it was Payne.

Prior to this tragic incident, Payne had been in Argentina to attend a concert by his former bandmate Niall Horan on October 2. Social media posts captured the joyful moments from the event, showing Payne enjoying the performance. He had recently celebrated his 31st birthday in the UK, sharing snippets of his celebrations on Snapchat.

Born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, Payne was the youngest of three siblings. He attended the City of Wolverhampton College, where he pursued studies in music technology. His journey in music began when he joined One Direction, which was formed in 2010 on the UK version of the reality competition show “The X Factor.” The band also featured Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Horan, quickly rising to global fame and becoming one of the best-selling music groups in history.

In a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Payne expressed his love for performing and songwriting with One Direction. He cited his pride in co-writing their hit song “What a Feeling,” which was inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s sound. “It just kinda came together. It was a nice driving jam — imagine driving down the coast,” he reminisced.

One Direction announced their hiatus in 2015, allowing members to explore solo projects. Payne released his debut solo album, “LP1,” in 2019 and was actively working on new music. In May 2023, he revealed he was excited about an upcoming album and had plans for a tour that was set to kick off in South America.

Despite his success, Payne had been candid about his struggles with substance abuse. He shared his journey towards recovery, stating he had completed treatment and was six months sober as of the summer of 2023. Unfortunately, he had to postpone his tour dates due to a kidney infection.

Earlier this year, Payne released the single “Teardrops,” which was well-received by fans. He also had a son, Bear, born in 2017, with former Girls Aloud member Cheryl Cole. In a heartfelt YouTube video from 2023, Payne spoke lovingly about his son, saying, “He’s awesome. He’s growing up far too quickly. He’s far more smart than I think I’ll ever be. He’s a wonder.”

The news of Payne’s death has sent shockwaves through the music community and among his fans worldwide. Many have taken to social media to express their grief and share memories of the joy he brought through his music.
