Bovi: Nigerian Entertainment Industry is Run by Women

2 min read

Popular Nigerian comedian, Bovi Ugboma has made it known that the Nigerian entertainment industry is controlled by women. He made this known recently when he appeared on the TVC program Your View.

According to him, even though women are always crying of fighting for equality in industries, sometimes the woman might have taken over and they keep fighting simply because they were used to fighting for fairness.

“Women need to realize that in some areas where they’re advocating for equality, they’ve already succeeded. But because they’re so used to the fight, they don’t realize they’ve won,” he said.

He cited the example of the entertainment industry, where he argued that women had been leading the charge for a while. “When we talk about how the entertainment industry can help women, I observed 10 to 15 years ago that women actually control it. What are we talking about?”

Bovi repeated that some of the biggest names in Nigerian entertainment are females: “From the days of Amaka Igwe, women have been leading. The biggest box office hit is by a female – Funke Akindele. The second biggest is also by a female – Mo Abudu. Bolanle Austin-Peters and Jade Osibero are top producers and Kemi Adetiba has paved the way for female directors. The largest film festival is organized by Chioma Ude. So, what are we saying?

“” The other women he gave as examples of those steering the industry are Omoni Oboli, Uche Jombo, and Genevieve Nnaji. Bovi said when young women come to him to complain about how male producers demand to have sex with them for roles, he asks them to speak up with the women who have already risen to power in the industry, saying, “You [women] own the industry.”
