Payne shot to international fame as part of One Direction, a band formed on The X Factor in 2010 alongside Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan. Fans braved drizzly weather in Hyde Park, bringing flowers, pictures, and heartfelt letters to honor his memory at the Peter Pan statue, the designated memorial site.

Alicia Sinclair, a 22-year-old organizer from Hertfordshire, expressed the profound influence One Direction had on her life, stating, “The band was a light in a lot of people’s lives, especially mine. There are a lot of people upset, and it’s a good time for us to come together and be with people who understand.” She reflected on her personal memories, noting, “My favorite memories with my sister are almost entirely revolving around One Direction. It feels like the end of us growing up together, and that’s what makes it so hard.”

In London, fans Emily and Olivia shared their experiences of growing up with Payne and One Direction. Emily, 25, reflected, “Being a Directioner became such an important community for me. It felt like you were part of the best club in the world.” Olivia, 23, added, “It was my first feeling of being in love, my first crush. We all kissed the posters every night.” The loss of Payne has hit them particularly hard, as Olivia lamented, “I always hoped for a One Direction reunion one day. We took it for granted.”

In Birmingham, hundreds gathered in Chamberlain Square, some bringing flowers while others danced and sang One Direction songs. Jamie Parker, 27, was among those leaving flowers and notes in tribute. He shared a poignant connection, explaining how he and his sister relied on One Direction’s music to help them cope with their grief after their mother’s death from cancer in 2013. “When I woke up to the news that he’d died, I was just in utter disbelief,” he said.

Elizabeth Turay attended the vigil with her sisters, recalling how they used to listen to Payne’s solo music as well as One Direction songs together. “It’s just been a massive part of our childhoods,” the 19-year-old noted. Sophie Peach, 18, described Payne as “my whole entire childhood,” recalling fond memories of dancing in their living room while singing along to One Direction’s hits.
