Idris Elba: Why I’m planning a move to Africa

British actor Idris Elba has announced his intention to relocate to Africa within the next decade, aiming to enhance the continent’s film industry. The 52-year-old, renowned for his roles in acclaimed projects like The Wire, is actively involved in developing a film studio in Zanzibar, Tanzania, as well as another in Accra, Ghana.

Elba’s connection to Africa runs deep; he was born in London to a Ghanaian mother and a Sierra Leonean father. This heritage fuels his desire to contribute to a cinematic landscape where African voices are central to storytelling. “I would certainly consider settling down here; not even consider, it’s going to happen,” he stated during an interview at an industry event in Accra. He plans to move within the next five to ten years, emphasizing that his commitment to supporting the film industry requires him to be present on the continent.

In line with his Pan-African vision, Elba is open to residing in multiple locations across Africa. He expressed a desire to live in various cities such as Accra, Freetown, and Zanzibar, stating, “I’m going to try and go where they’re telling stories—that’s really important.” One of his aspirations is to produce a film in his studio in Accra, showcasing local talent and narratives.

Elba has been vocal about the necessity of Africans being at the forefront of the film-making process, not just in front of the camera but also behind it, in roles related to financing, distribution, and marketing. He envisions a future where audiences worldwide appreciate the rich tapestry of African cultures and stories, much like they recognize the distinct characteristics of cities like New York and Los Angeles. “This sector is a soft power, not just across Ghana but across Africa,” he noted.

He is particularly concerned about the portrayal of Africa in global media. “If you watch any film or anything that has got to do with Africa, all you’re going to see is trauma—how we were slaves, how we were colonized, how it’s just war,” he remarked. Elba believes it’s crucial for Africans to reclaim their narratives, emphasizing the importance of telling their own stories that reflect their traditions, cultures, and languages. “The world doesn’t know that,” he added.

The film industry in Nigeria, particularly Nollywood, is one of the continent’s most prolific, producing hundreds of films annually and serving as a significant cultural export. Additionally, there is a tradition of high-quality filmmaking in many Francophone African countries. However, Elba has pointed out that despite this wealth of talent, the necessary infrastructure and facilities for filmmaking are often lacking.

A 2022 report by UNESCO corroborated Elba’s observations, highlighting that while there has been significant growth in production across Africa, challenges such as piracy, inadequate training opportunities, and a lack of formal film institutions impede progress. Elba believes that with the right investment and government support, a positive cycle can be created to foster this burgeoning industry.

“We have to invest in our storytelling because when you see me, you see a little version of yourself, and that encourages us,” he asserted. By positioning himself in Africa, Elba aims to contribute to a vibrant cinematic future that reflects the continent’s diverse narratives and experiences.
