In Sudan’s Gezira state, reports reveal that several women have taken their own lives after being raped by paramilitary fighters from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) amid the ongoing civil war. Rights groups indicate a rise in suicides linked to sexual violence, with one organization in contact with women contemplating suicide due to fear of further assaults.
The RSF has been accused by the UN of committing atrocious crimes, including mass killings and rampant sexual violence, while denying these allegations. The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and displaced over 11 million since April 2023.
An 80-page UN report documented at least 400 survivors of sexual violence, with many needing urgent medical care as healthcare facilities are devastated. Activists are providing psychological support to affected women and working to ensure their safety amid escalating violence.
