Burkina Faso and Cameroon Secure Spots at 2025 Africa Cup of Nations

1 min read

Burkina Faso and Cameroon have both secured their places at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with two rounds of qualifying still to go.

Burkina Faso became the first team to qualify for the tournament, set to be held in Morocco, following a 2-0 victory over Burundi on Sunday. The Stallions, who have earned 10 points from their first four matches, are assured a top-two finish in Group L.

Mohamed Konate gave Burkina Faso an early lead in the match played in neutral Abidjan, and a stoppage-time penalty from Bertrand Traore, the former Aston Villa star now playing for Ajax, secured all three points.

Cameroon followed suit with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Kenya in Kampala, thanks to a 63rd-minute goal from Boris Enow. The Indomitable Lions now have 10 points in Group J and are guaranteed to finish ahead of Kenya on head-to-head record.

Both Burundi and Kenya were forced to play their home games in Ivory Coast and Uganda, respectively, due to a lack of suitable stadiums for international matches.

Several other nations, including Algeria, Angola, DR Congo, Egypt, and Ivory Coast, could also qualify by the end of this round of matches, with the 2025 AFCON set to kick off on December 21, 2025, and conclude on January 18, 2026.
