The Central African Republic (CAR) has recently bolstered its political alliance with Russia through a significant cooperation agreement between the ruling party, the United Hearts Movement (MCU), and United Russia, the party of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The deal was signed remotely on Monday, marking a formal step in strengthening the partnership between the two nations. This new agreement follows closely on the heels of a three-day official visit to Russia by CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, underscoring the growing ties between Bangui and Moscow.
The signing took place with Andrei Klimov, a senior member of United Russia, representing the Russian side. Klimov, who is also a senator under Western sanctions due to his support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, participated in the virtual signing ceremony. On the CAR side, Simplice Mathieu Sarandji, a close ally of President Touadéra, led the Central African delegation. Sarandji, who is not only the president of the National Assembly but also the MCU’s executive secretary, signed the agreement while wearing a ceremonial scarf featuring Touadéra’s image draped over his shoulders.
The signing ceremony was attended by several Russian officials, including Ambassador Alexandre Bikantov, Consul Vladislav Ilin, and Dimitri Sityi, the director of the Russian House in Bangui.
