Chad Faces Devastating Floods Amid Ongoing Food Crises

1 min read

Chad is grappling with a catastrophic situation as relentless rains have unleashed severe flooding across all 23 provinces of the country. Already strained by recurrent food shortages, the nation now faces a new humanitarian disaster.

The scale of the tragedy is staggering: over 500 lives have been lost, and thousands of families have been left homeless as floodwaters ravaged their communities. In addition to the human toll, the flooding has devastated more than 400,000 hectares of farmland, further exacerbating food insecurity in a country where hunger affects over 3.4 million people.

Infrastructure has been severely impacted, with roads and bridges submerged, making it extremely difficult for relief workers to reach affected areas. The destruction of vital transportation links complicates efforts to deliver assistance to those in need.

Particularly vulnerable are pregnant women, many of whom have been displaced and find themselves in makeshift camps with limited access to essential healthcare services. In light of this crisis, 248 midwives have been mobilized to provide emergency care to those in need. Additionally, essential hygiene kits have been distributed to 12,000 women and girls, aiming to address immediate health and sanitation concerns.

The situation in Chad highlights the urgent need for international support and intervention to aid those affected by both the floods and the ongoing food crises. As the country navigates this dual challenge, the resilience of its people is being tested like never before.
