1 min read

Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Chairman of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) Task Force, has praised recent efforts by Benin and Niger to restore the free movement of people and goods between their countries.

The Cotonou-Niamey Corridor, crucial for trade and travel, has faced significant disruptions recently. Dr. Chambas reported that following high-level mediation, Niger sent a senior delegation led by General Mohamed Toumba, the Minister of the Interior, to Benin. The discussions between the two countries were constructive, aimed at resolving the ongoing issues.

Dr. Chambas commended the positive steps taken by both nations, highlighting the constructive initiative of the former Presidents of Benin and the openness demonstrated by the current Presidents of Benin and Niger. He expressed appreciation for the successful consultations in Niamey and the reciprocal visit to Cotonou, where President Patrice Talon warmly welcomed the Nigerien delegation.

In a statement shared with the Ghana News Agency, Dr. Chambas acknowledged the contributions of former Presidents Nicephore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi in efforts to resume the free movement between Benin and Niger, which had been halted since July 2023. He noted that during the mediation visit to Niamey, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, Niger’s Head of State, met with the former Presidents, leading to in-depth discussions aimed at resolving the crisis between the two historically and socially connected nations.
