In a significant boost to Ghana’s road infrastructure, the government has allocated over GHC10 billion for development projects throughout 2024. This investment is part of the broader initiative to upgrade the nation’s transport networks, including roads, railways, and air infrastructure. Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced this during a recent event in Accra, emphasizing the administration’s ongoing commitment to enhancing domestic trade and efficient goods movement since President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia took office in 2017.
The announcement was made during the commissioning of 2,240 units of construction equipment for the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs). President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officiated the handover ceremony at the Black Star Square in Accra. The newly introduced equipment, including bulldozers, rollers, graders, tipper trucks, and water tankers, is part of the District Road Network Improvement Programme (DRIP), designed to significantly improve road conditions across Ghana.
Dr. Amin Adam highlighted that the DRIP initiative is a pivotal step toward developing Ghana’s road infrastructure. He stressed the importance of the road network as the economic backbone of the country, facilitating community connections, trade, and the delivery of essential services. This program is expected to not only enhance road safety and quality but also generate around 10,000 jobs for auto mechanics, operators, technicians, and drivers, further stimulating local economies.
The DRIP-2024 initiative, under the supervision of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, in partnership with the Ministries of Roads and Highways, Finance, and the District Assemblies Common Fund, represents an unprecedented effort in road infrastructure development. According to Mr. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, the Minister of Local Government, this effort marks the largest single investment in road maintenance and construction equipment in Ghana’s history.
Mr. Korsah noted that this initiative would significantly impact both rural and urban areas, improving road conditions and supporting the mobility of goods and services. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to deepen trade links and improve access to essential services, fostering economic growth and development.
To ensure the effective use of the new equipment, the government has established a stringent monitoring and compliance mechanism. This oversight aims to prevent misuse and ensure that the equipment is properly maintained and utilized. Cooperation among the involved institutions will be crucial to the successful implementation of this initiative.
Overall, this substantial investment underscores the government’s dedication to building a more connected and prosperous Ghana. By addressing road infrastructure needs, the DRIP-2024 initiative is set to play a crucial role in supporting sustainable economic growth and improving the quality of life for Ghanaians across the country.
