Kajiado County Heightens Vigilance Amid Mpox Outbreak

2 min read

Kajiado County has elevated its alert status in response to recent cases of Mpox reported across the nation. The county’s heightened vigilance is a precautionary measure given its geographical positioning near Nairobi and its porous borders, which may facilitate the spread of infectious diseases.

Alex Kilowua, the Kajiado County Executive Committee Member for Health, has emphasized the importance of public awareness and preventive measures. In a statement made from Imbirikani in Kajiado South constituency, Kilowua urged residents to adhere to public health protocols designed to curb the spread of Mpox.

Despite no reported cases within Kajiado County to date, Kilowua stressed the need for vigilance, particularly at border points. The county’s strategic location necessitates proactive measures to prevent potential outbreaks.

Recent reports from the Health Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Deborah Barasa, confirm that Kenya has identified its fifth Mpox case, this time in Mombasa County. In addition, 33 cases are under close monitoring. Of the five confirmed cases, two individuals have fully recovered, while the remaining three are in isolation and showing positive responses to treatment.

Mpox, a viral illness similar to smallpox, is spread through direct contact with infected individuals, contaminated bodily fluids, clothing, utensils, or even through contact with infected wild animals. In light of this, public health officials are advising caution and recommending several preventive measures to reduce the risk of transmission.

The general public is encouraged to avoid close contact with anyone displaying symptoms of Mpox as well as with potentially infected animals, whether alive or dead. Maintaining high standards of personal hygiene—such as frequent hand washing with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers—is also advised. Additionally, individuals are urged to minimize travel to regions experiencing Mpox outbreaks and to promptly report any suspected cases to local health authorities or the nearest health facility.

For further information or assistance regarding Mpox, the Ministry of Health has established a hotline at 719 and an additional contact number, +254732353535. These resources are available to provide guidance and support to the public.

Symptoms of Mpox to be aware of include a high fever, headache, body rash, enlarged lymph nodes, muscle and body aches, fatigue, and general discomfort. Recognizing these symptoms early is crucial for timely medical intervention and containment.

The Ministry of Health remains committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of all citizens and is actively implementing comprehensive response strategies to address the Mpox situation. Public cooperation and adherence to health guidelines are essential components in controlling the spread of this infectious disease.

As Kajiado County and the wider region navigate this public health challenge, the focus remains on vigilance, prevention, and the prompt reporting of any cases to ensure that the spread of Mpox is effectively managed and contained.
