Kithure Kindiki: Kenya’s Likely Next Deputy President Amid Controversy

Kithure Kindiki, the recently nominated candidate for Kenya’s deputy presidency, has become a prominent figure in the political landscape following his role as the government spokesperson during a controversial police response to anti-tax protests. Parliament has officially approved Kindiki’s nomination to replace Rigathi Gachagua, who was ousted in a dramatic impeachment vote just a day prior.

At 52 years old, Kindiki brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as President William Ruto’s interior minister for the past two years. In this capacity, he oversaw security services during a wave of protests that erupted in June, leading to a tragic outcome where more than 40 lives were lost and over 300 individuals sustained injuries. Despite the gravity of the situation, Kindiki praised the police for their “restraint” in enforcing order, asserting that no shoot-to-kill orders had been issued. This perspective sparked public outrage, particularly from human rights organizations demanding accountability for victims and those who disappeared under questionable circumstances.

Kindiki’s response to the protests has been framed by some as a bid to solidify his position within Ruto’s administration, especially after surviving a ministerial culling that affected many of his colleagues. His longstanding alliance with President Ruto dates back over a decade, having served as Ruto’s legal counsel during a case before the International Criminal Court (ICC). Ruto faced accusations of crimes against humanity related to the post-2007 election violence that claimed over 1,200 lives, though the case was ultimately dropped due to a lack of evidence. Prosecutors suggested that intimidation of witnesses was a significant factor in the case’s dismissal.

Both Kindiki and Gachagua hail from the Mount Kenya region, and Kindiki’s elevation to the deputy presidency is seen as a strategic move to bolster Ruto’s support in this crucial area following Gachagua’s impeachment. Known for his polished appearance and meticulous grooming, Kindiki’s communication style is marked by a deliberative approach, honed during his years in legal practice and academia. With a master’s degree and a PhD from the University of Pretoria, he has authored over 30 publications in peer-reviewed journals, demonstrating his extensive knowledge in public policy, governance, and constitutional affairs.

Kindiki began his political journey in 2013 as the elected senator for Tharaka-Nithi County, later serving as Senate majority leader for five years. After being re-elected in 2017, he held the position of deputy speaker until 2020. Following Ruto’s victory in the 2022 presidential elections, Kindiki was appointed to the cabinet, where he frequently represented the government during crises.

One of the more harrowing incidents during his tenure involved the discovery of hundreds of bodies in a forest, allegedly linked to a cult led by self-styled pastor Paul Mackenzie, who encouraged followers to fast to death. Kindiki described this discovery as a “massacre,” showcasing the weight of his responsibilities during national tragedies. More recently, he faced the heartbreaking aftermath of a dormitory fire that claimed the lives of 17 schoolchildren, where he pledged full accountability for those responsible.

Interestingly, there were speculations in 2022 that Kindiki might be appointed as Ruto’s deputy, but Gachagua ultimately secured the position, bringing significant political influence and financial backing. Ruto later remarked that Kindiki had “missed the chance to be deputy president by a whisker.”

Currently, Kindiki’s swearing-in as deputy president is on hold due to a legal challenge concerning Gachagua’s rapid removal from office. The Nairobi High Court has suspended his confirmation until the case is resolved. Should Gachagua’s ousting be upheld, Kindiki is expected to assume the role and likely prove to be a more loyal deputy, aligning closely with Ruto’s agenda.
