Many Lives Lost and 61 Missing After Two Migrant Boats Capsize Near Djibouti

The boats departed from Yemen carrying 310 people, the IOM says

A devastating maritime disaster has unfolded off the coast of Djibouti, where at least 45 people have lost their lives and 61 are still unaccounted for after two migrant boats sank. The boats had set sail from Yemen, carrying a total of 310 individuals, before succumbing to the treacherous waters of the Red Sea on Tuesday, according to officials from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Djibouti’s coastguard has confirmed that search operations are ongoing, emphasizing their commitment to locate those still missing. “To date, 61 individuals are still missing, and the search operations are continuing relentlessly,” they stated.

This incident marks yet another tragic chapter in a perilous migration route known for its high risks, as it remains one of the busiest and most dangerous passages for refugees and migrants fleeing conflict, natural disasters, and dire economic conditions in Africa. A large-scale search effort commenced early on Monday, supported by the IOM, and as of now, 115 survivors have been rescued.

The boats capsized a mere 150 meters (492 feet) from a beach in the Khor Angar region of northwest Djibouti. Each year, thousands of migrants embark on this perilous journey across the Red Sea, hoping to reach the oil-rich Gulf states in search of better opportunities.

This recent tragedy follows a similar incident in June, where at least 56 Somali and Ethiopian migrants perished when their boat capsized in the Gulf of Aden off Yemen’s southern coast. Tragically, among the victims were 31 women and six children, highlighting the vulnerability of those attempting such dangerous crossings.

According to the IOM, the number of migrants arriving in Yemen from the Horn of Africa has surged, rising from approximately 73,000 in 2022 to over 97,200 the following year. Many of these individuals are forced to rely on human smugglers, who often provide overcrowded and unsafe vessels for the journey.

The international community continues to grapple with the implications of these migratory patterns, as well as the urgent need for more effective measures to ensure the safety and dignity of migrants. The IOM has reiterated its commitment to supporting search and rescue operations, stating, “We remain committed to finding the missing persons and ensuring the safety of the survivors.”

As rescue efforts continue, the tragic loss of life serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by those seeking refuge and a better life. It highlights the urgent need for comprehensive solutions that address the root causes of migration and provide safe pathways for those in search of safety and opportunity.
