Firefighters battle intense blaze near Table Mountain as Cape Town residents evacuate.

In Cape Town, South Africa, nearly 200 households have been evacuated due to a destructive fire that erupted near the Table Mountains on Friday.

According to Jermaine Carelse, the spokesperson for Fire and Rescue in the City of Cape Town, Disaster Risk Management (DRM) assisted in evacuating 198 households from Noordhoek Manor, including 48 frail care residents. Additionally, residents of Barnyard and Silwersteen made the decision to evacuate voluntarily.

The fire, which spread rapidly across difficult-to-access areas of the mountain, forced hundreds of families to leave their homes under the Municipality’s orders due to safety concerns. At least 100 firefighters have been deployed to fight the blaze across five different fronts. Evacuations were also carried out in Steenberg Estate, Zwaanswyk, and Noordhoek Manor.

The fire began in Tokai on Friday, and by Monday morning, no further flare-ups had been reported, Carelse stated.

While the cause of the fire remains unclear, authorities confirmed that only one firefighter has been reported injured so far. Investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.
