Ghanaian Rapper Turns to Truck Driving in America

To many, Pope Skinny is that Ghanaian rapper whose nearly three-decade-long career seems to have gone up in flames. Now, he has revealed trading his mic for a rather surprising career change: truck driving in the United States of America.

Speaking in a recent interview, the hip-life artiste stated his reason for moving to America and taking up another profession. In Ghana, according to Skinny, the trials musicians go through make life unsustainable in the country.

“I drive a big truck in America,” Skinny said. “I cannot do it in Ghana because people will laugh at me.”

The securing of one’s future and financial security when the uncertainty with the music industry shows its face was an issue that this rapper raised. He emphasized strengthening support systems and infrastructure for Ghanaian musicians.

“If you look at all these, you’ll advise yourself, leave and go pay your social security contributions in the West, where the scheme is not corrupt, and they’ll take care of you till you die,” said Skinny.

Despite all the hustle he went through in Ghana, Skinny admitted that his fame as a musician has, in some way, helped him. He said being a public figure helped him to acquire a green card for the United States of America.

Now, as Skinny goes after this career path and reinvents himself, his story comes to mind about the struggle many artists endure in Ghana and the necessity to find some other outlets to secure financial stability.
