Samson Deen Wins Another Term As NPC Ghana President
2 min readMr. Samson Deen, President of the African Paralympic Committee, was returned as President of the Ghana Paralympic Committee at the 2024 Elective General Assembly held at the Accra Digital Center.
Mr. Deen won the polls unopposed and was declared winner by the presiding officer of the electoral commission of Ghana, Madam Abigail D.A Nutakor.
He first came into office in the 2019 race, winning a keenly-contested victory over his opponent, Shabaan Mohammed, who is the Ghana Cycling Association Technical Director, by seven votes to six.
In an exclusive interview he granted GHONE TV Sports after his election, Deen shared his vision for a stronger representation of Ghana in the impending Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.
He said he felt members of the Paralympic movement wanted him to stay in the position and included, “Today’s election also shows we have new energy and fresh approach towards ensuring Ghana competes at the LA 2028 Paralympic Games in the USA.”.
What the NPC board is to do now is to solidify the grounds for the associations here in Ghana. To that, we will build top athletes who can go anywhere in the world and compete. More importantly, that would require the collaboration of all to take the para-sport a notch higher.
During his first tenure, Ghana hosted the maiden ever African Para Games, which the Black Challenge won in the Amputee Football Team. In the ongoing year, in the month of May, Ghana’s Amputee team won the African title by defeating the host nation, Morocco. He oversaw Ghana qualify for a ticket to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Deen is also president of the African Paralympic Committee, and was elected last week with 24 votes to Morocco’s Hamid El Aouni, who had 15 votes, in a bid to replace Leonel da Rocha Pinto, who had headed the organization for 13 years. These were augmented by the election onto the board of four executive members: Iddriss Ayishetu Farida, Foster Kwarteng, Mary Apedo, and Anthony Gyening. At the NPC in Ghana, the positions of Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer were filled by Evans Yeboah, Henry Larbi, and Richard Teinor respectively.
