Unexploded Ordnance Threatens Displaced Palestinians in Central Gaza Strip

In the central Gaza Strip, displaced residents are facing a growing concern for their safety due to the presence of unexploded missiles scattered throughout busy streets and makeshift camps. In the town of Deir al-Balah, many families are expressing frustration over the lack of action from organizations responsible for clearing these dangerous remnants of war.

As designated safe zones become increasingly scarce in Gaza, many people find themselves living in close proximity to these hazardous munitions. For instance, near the Rawafed Shelter Centre in Deir al-Balah, where numerous displaced families from Gaza City have sought refuge, an unexploded Israeli missile from January remains dangerously close.

Ahmed Abu Jarad, a local resident, shared his anxiety: “We’ve contacted everyone to remove the missile because this area is densely populated, and there are many children here.” His concerns echo those of many in the community who feel abandoned in the face of these persistent threats.

According to a previous report by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), an estimated 7,500 tons of unexploded ordnance litter the Gaza Strip, a dire consequence of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The report highlighted that it could take as long as 14 years to fully clear these dangerous remnants.

UNMAS is attempting to address this crisis through awareness campaigns, utilizing social media and text messaging to educate residents about the dangers posed by unexploded explosives. Despite these efforts, the reality on the ground remains grim, with many families feeling neglected and unsafe.

As the situation in Gaza continues to evolve, the urgency for effective clearance operations has never been greater. Residents are calling for immediate action from both local and international agencies to mitigate the risks associated with unexploded ordnance, emphasizing that their lives depend on it.
