Philemon Yang Takes Helm of UN General Assembly, Urges Global Unity

Philemon Yang, the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, has officially assumed the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly. His appointment on Tuesday marks a pivotal moment as he calls for a united global front to tackle pressing issues such as climate change, poverty, conflict, and armed violence.

Addressing the 193-member Assembly, Yang acknowledged the skepticism surrounding the capacity of nations to collaborate effectively on these critical challenges. Nonetheless, he emphasized the necessity of international cooperation, asserting, “We must demonstrate that international cooperation remains the most effective tool at our disposal to address the deep and borderless problems we face.”

Yang, who served as Cameroon’s Prime Minister from 2009 to 2019, stressed that his presidency would be founded on the principle of “unity in diversity.” He highlighted that maintaining peace and security would be a central focus during his tenure. “I will therefore urge the Assembly to intensify its determination to prioritize the resolution of conflicts, including the persistent crises in the Gaza Strip, Haiti, and Ukraine, as well as to seek lasting solutions to issues in the Great Lakes region and other parts of Africa,” Yang stated.

The outgoing President of the General Assembly, Dennis Francis, echoed Yang’s call for heightened international cooperation. Francis, who served as Trinidad and Tobago’s diplomat and ambassador, underscored the urgency of addressing the immense human suffering resulting from ongoing conflicts. “It is no exaggeration to say that the scale of man-made human suffering around the world is simply staggering,” he remarked, pointing to crises in Gaza and other regions.

Francis also raised concerns about global poverty, warning that millions live in dire conditions and projecting that many more could face poverty and hunger by 2030 if current trends continue.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres supported these sentiments, stressing the need for collective action. He noted that the 78th session of the General Assembly, which concluded earlier this week, had been marked by challenges such as persistent poverty, inequality, injustice, division, violence, and the hottest year on record.

Despite these issues, Guterres offered a message of optimism. “This session ends at a time of growing hope and inspiration about what we can achieve if we work together,” he said.

During the opening of the 79th session of the Assembly on Tuesday afternoon, Guterres urged diplomats to build trust and foster collaboration. “Step by step, solution by solution, we can rebuild trust and faith in each other, and in what we can achieve through collaboration and solidarity,” he asserted.

Under Yang’s leadership, the General Assembly will kick off its next series of gatherings with the Future Summit, scheduled for September 22-23. This summit, convened by the Secretary-General, aims to galvanize multilateral efforts on global challenges and explore reforms for international institutions established post-World War II, including the United Nations.

Following the summit, the annual General Assembly meeting will take place from September 24 to 30. This will include public speeches and numerous private discussions among world leaders, where key global issues are expected to be addressed.
