BRELAND’s “Project 2024”: A Musical Reflection Inspired by Selma

BRELAND JOHNNIE IZQUIERDO

In recent years, BRELAND has embarked on a remarkable journey in the music industry. Following the release of his debut album, “Cross Country,” in 2022, he showcased a dynamic interpretation of country music that resonates with the genre’s evolving landscape. His relentless touring, numerous accolades, and collaborations with prominent artists marked a significant chapter in his career. However, recognizing the importance of introspection, BRELAND took a step back to reflect on his future direction.

To facilitate this self-exploration, he traveled to Selma, Alabama—a place with deep familial roots, once home to both his great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. This journey was inspired by a similar trip his mother had taken the previous year and ultimately led to the creation of his new EP, titled “Project 2024.”

“Selma is often viewed as a vibrant symbol of hope, freedom, and resilience within the American and African American communities. Yet, it is also a town that many have overlooked,” BRELAND explains. He noted the lingering effects of a tornado that struck the area the previous year, with many storefronts from the 1960s still vacant. “It is essentially a food desert. The closest hospital is 30 miles away. My visit revealed a community that was not what I had anticipated, prompting me to realize that I could have easily grown up in such an environment. Historically, these are my people.”

This enlightening experience underscored his desire to create music that highlights Selma and conveys authentic narratives. These themes are prevalent throughout “Project 2024,” particularly in his collaboration with The War & Treaty on the track “Same Work.” He describes this song as the most traditional country piece on the EP.

In the lyrics, BRELAND shares a poignant encounter from a meet-and-greet, where a fan—a veteran now working as a nurse—recounted his story of providing free healthcare. The fan noted, “You and I perform similar roles,” to which BRELAND responded, “We certainly do not. Your work is hands-on; you are directly assisting those in need.” The fan countered, “That is precisely what you do.” This exchange resonated deeply, serving as the emotional core of the six-track EP, culminating in a reminder of humanity’s capacity for goodness.

Regarding the title “Project 2024,” BRELAND clarifies that it bears no relation to Project 2025, a significant document advocating for changes in American governance that has gained attention ahead of the presidential election. “Having visited Selma and witnessed the experiences of its residents, I believe there are numerous freedoms we should not take for granted. I choose to convey this sentiment through my music, making it more of a creative initiative than a political statement,” he elaborates. “In the most straightforward terms, this is the sole project I will release in 2024. You can interpret it in that context.”

He acknowledges that the title might be provocative, potentially sparking engagement—whether positive or negative. “I do not believe any of the songs in this project carry political themes. However, my presence in this arena as a vocal young Black man, unafraid to engage in challenging discussions, does have political implications. Nonetheless, I strive to ensure that the music remains as accessible as possible.”

Continuing the genre-blending approach he initiated with “Cross Country,” BRELAND incorporates diverse influences in “Project 2024.” For example, the track “Motion” features elements of Afrobeat, while “Icing” showcases Southern gospel influences. This fusion not only reflects his musical versatility but also fosters connections that transcend geographical boundaries.

Ultimately, “Project 2024” serves as a heartfelt exploration of BRELAND’s heritage and the communities that have shaped him. While it may not be overtly political, the EP resonates with listeners on a human level, fostering understanding and empathy through its authentic storytelling. As BRELAND continues to evolve as an artist, his commitment to highlighting the experiences of those often overlooked in society remains at the forefront of his work, paving the way for meaningful conversations through music.
