Martin Lee, the beloved singer and songwriter known for his role in the pop group Brotherhood of Man, has died at the age of 77. According to a statement shared by the PA News Agency and posted on the band’s official Facebook page, Lee passed away on Sunday due to heart failure following a brief illness.

Brotherhood of Man achieved worldwide fame after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976 with their hit song “Save Your Kisses for Me.” The track not only claimed the top spot in the contest but also reached number one in over 30 countries, becoming one of the best-selling singles in Eurovision history. In their heartfelt tribute, Lee’s bandmates—Nicky Stevens, Lee Sheriden, and particularly Sandra Stevens, who was married to him for 45 years—expressed their profound sense of loss, stating, “He will be sadly missed.”

Joining Brotherhood of Man in 1972, Lee took on the role of lead vocalist and guitarist, contributing significantly to the band’s distinctive sound. The song that brought them Eurovision glory, “Save Your Kisses for Me,” was performed in the Netherlands and topped the scoring table with an impressive 164 points, outpacing France by 17 points.

Tony Hiller, the group’s manager, credited the song’s monumental success to the band’s extensive television appearances in countries like France, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland in the year leading up to the contest. The single went on to sell an astonishing six million copies worldwide.

In addition to their iconic Eurovision win, Brotherhood of Man produced several other hits that have stood the test of time, including “United We Stand,” “Oh Boy,” and “Kiss Me Kiss Your Baby.” Lee was also a prolific songwriter, co-writing many of the group’s songs with fellow band member Lee Sheriden, including the chart-toppers “Angelo” and “Figaro,” both of which reached number one in the UK.

After their Eurovision success, Brotherhood of Man continued to tour internationally, delighting fans with their performances. However, the group announced their retirement from performing in 2020, marking the end of an era.

The band reflected on their time together, saying, “We have so many happy memories, but now we are in total shock and cannot imagine a world without Martin Lee.” His contributions to music and the joy he brought to fans around the globe will be cherished and remembered.

Before his time with Brotherhood of Man, Lee had already begun to make a name for himself in the music industry. He released a solo single titled “Cry Jose” and played with the Johnny Howard Band, showcasing his talent early in his career. Born Martin Barnes on November 26, 1946, in Purley, London, Lee spent five formative years in Australia during his youth.

Lee’s legacy in the music world, especially as part of Brotherhood of Man, is marked by their cheerful and uplifting songs that continue to resonate with fans. The band was known for their harmonies and vibrant performances, which captivated audiences during their peak years.

As news of Lee’s passing spreads, tributes from fans and fellow musicians have begun to pour in, celebrating not only his talent but also his warmth and kindness as a person. His contributions to pop music have left an indelible mark, and he will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of listening to his music or witnessing his performances.

In a world that often changes too quickly, Martin Lee’s songs will remain a testament to the joy and connection that music can bring. He leaves behind a legacy filled with cherished memories, beloved songs, and the love of those who knew him best.
