Acclaimed actress Cate Blanchett is set to return to the stage after a six-year hiatus, starring in Anton Chekhov’s classic play, The Seagull. Blanchett, who won Oscars for her roles in The Aviator and Blue Jasmine, will portray the character of Arkadina in this new adaptation. The production will be staged at the Barbican Theatre in London for a six-week run starting in February.
Director Thomas Ostermeier, known for his innovative approach to theatre, expressed his enthusiasm about Blanchett’s involvement. He referred to her as a “once-in-a-generation actress,” highlighting the privilege of working with her. Ostermeier, who has long admired Blanchett, is excited about their collaboration on this project and is equally thrilled to work with Tom Burke, who will play the role of Trigorin.
Blanchett and Burke’s partnership in The Seagull marks a reunion of sorts, as they recently wrapped filming together for Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming film, Black Bag. Ostermeier commented that “I am thrilled that we will make our first artistic collaboration with this production of The Seagull at the Barbican. London will have the opportunity to witness a once-in-a-generation actress in one of the greatest theatrical roles of Arkadina. I am also delighted to be working with Tom Burke, who brings depth and nuance to the role of Trigorin.”
The new adaptation of The Seagull follows a recent production featuring Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, which played in London two years ago. In this classic Chekhovian drama, Blanchett’s character Arkadina is a celebrated actress whose presence overshadows those around her. Upon visiting her family’s country estate for a weekend, she must navigate personal conflicts: her son struggles to emerge from her shadow, and her lover becomes the object of affection for a young aspiring actress. The play delves into themes such as ambition, vanity, disappointment, and desire.
The production will be produced by Wessex Grove, the same team behind Ostermeier’s recent adaptation of An Enemy of the People, which starred Matt Smith. Blanchett’s last stage performance at the Barbican was in 2012’s Big and Small (Gross und Klein). Her most recent theatre role was in a 2019 National Theatre production of When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other, which was performed just before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Blanchett’s illustrious film career includes notable performances in Carol, Nightmare Alley, Tár, Don’t Look Up, Notes on a Scandal, Thor: Ragnarok, and Ocean’s 8. In addition to her two Academy Awards, she has received eight nominations for her acting work.
Tom Burke, who will share the stage with Blanchett, has appeared in a range of films including The Wonder, Living, The Souvenir, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
The anticipation for this new adaptation of The Seagull is high, as it promises to bring together the talents of Blanchett and Burke under the direction of Ostermeier, offering a fresh take on a timeless piece of theatre.
