Mariah Carey lost her mum and sister on the same day

Mariah Carey has announced the heartbreaking news that both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, passed away on the same day over the weekend. The singer shared her grief in a statement released on Monday, expressing profound sorrow over the double tragedy.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” Carey said. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.” The Grammy-winning artist described the past week as a time of bittersweet closure, having spent time with her mother shortly before her death. Carey also requested privacy during this difficult period, noting that no further details about the causes of death would be disclosed.

Patricia Carey, 87, was an esteemed opera singer and vocal coach of Irish-American heritage. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer opened up about their complex relationship. She described it as fraught with emotional turmoil and competition, stating that her mother’s jealousy over her success had been particularly painful given their familial bond. Despite the challenges, Carey expressed deep affection for her mother, dedicating the book with a heartfelt message: “To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

In a 2022 interview with Gayle King, Carey reflected on how her mother’s criticism had affected her throughout her life but also acknowledged the significant role her mother played in introducing her to music.

Carey’s relationship with her older sister Alison, 63, was also strained. In her memoir, Carey discussed the estrangement from Alison and their brother Morgan, explaining that maintaining distance was crucial for her emotional and physical safety. Alison had even filed a $1.2 million lawsuit against Carey following the memoir’s publication, claiming it caused “immense emotional distress” and labeling the book as “vindictive.”

The singer’s father, Alfred Carey, passed away in 2002 at the age of 72 after a battle with cancer. Despite these personal challenges, Mariah Carey remains one of the most successful and influential singers in the world. Her iconic holiday single, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” holds the title of the best-selling Christmas song by a female artist ever. Additionally, she has set records with 19 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, sold over 220 million records worldwide, and served as a judge on American Idol.
