TikTok Sensation Challenges Stereotypes: British Food Is Far from Bland

3 min read

Kalani Smith, a TikTok star from Mount Juliet, Tennessee, is on a mission to challenge the widespread belief that British food is bland and unremarkable. Known online as Kalani Ghost Hunter (KGH), Smith initially garnered fame with his paranormal investigations. However, a shift in focus to reviewing British cuisine has dramatically increased his follower count to over three million on TikTok.

During a recent tour of South Wales, Smith made a bold statement: the food at Cardiff Market surpasses that of Camden Market in London by “10 times out of 10.” This assertion highlights Smith’s commitment to disproving the common perception, particularly in the United States, that British food lacks flavor and appeal.

“The most interesting aspect of this journey is confronting the global perception that UK food is bland and bad,” Smith remarked. “My goal has been to document that this is not the case. While no cuisine is perfect, there are definitely some incredible dishes out there.”

Smith, who has traveled extensively across the UK, believes that many Americans only experience British food through a London-centric lens. “A lot of people come to the UK, visit London, and think they’ve seen it all,” he explained. “But having visited many cities and tried various regional dishes, I’ve developed a more nuanced understanding of British cuisine.”

Smith’s transition from ghost hunting to food reviewing began unexpectedly during a trip to the UK earlier this year. After sampling a traditional roast dinner, he decided to focus exclusively on food reviews, a decision that significantly expanded his audience and influence.

Among the many British culinary experiences Smith has had, he particularly praises the UK’s curry scene. “The UK’s curry scene is unparalleled,” he said. “You can find excellent curry in so many parts of the UK.”

However, not all British dishes have won Smith’s approval. He was less impressed by the traditional London pie, mash, and liquor, which he found unappealing. “That liquor sauce is something I wouldn’t want to eat again,” he commented.

During his recent visit to South Wales, Smith explored Newport, Cardiff, Port Talbot, and Swansea, discovering several highlights of Welsh cuisine. One standout was the Welsh cake from Cardiff Bakestones, which he described as “absolutely incredible.” His previous experience with packaged Welsh cakes from Morrisons had been disappointing, so the fresh ones were a pleasant surprise.

Smith also enjoyed the unique twist on Welsh cuisine found at Cardiff Market, where he tried Welsh tacos from The Bearded Taco. “Some of the best tacos I’ve had in the UK are from Cardiff Market,” he said.

Kalani enjoyed his time in Glasgow.

In Swansea, Smith sampled local specialties such as cockles and laverbread, as well as Welsh rarebit. He had a mixed experience with laverbread, which he found unappetizing on its own but enjoyed in combination with other ingredients. His review of Joe’s Ice Cream in Swansea was more reserved. Although he acknowledged its popularity among locals, he felt it did not rank among the best ice cream he has tasted. “Joe’s Ice Cream is good, but it’s not something I’d go out of my way for,” he noted.

Smith emphasizes the importance of balancing respect for local culinary traditions with honest feedback. “The key is to be respectful,” he said. “Even when giving a negative review, I strive to be considerate. Each city and region has dishes they are proud of, and while I might not enjoy everything, it doesn’t mean others won’t.”

Through his reviews, Smith aims to shift perceptions and highlight the diverse and rich culinary landscape of the UK. His honest yet respectful approach has resonated with his growing audience, helping to challenge and change outdated stereotypes about British food.
