Accra Prepares for ‘Accra Goes to Opera’ Concert Celebrating Classical Music and African Unity
2 min readOpera lovers in Accra are about to have a night to remember as the much-hyped ‘Accra Goes to Opera‘ concert is set to enter its stage on November 24, 2024, at the ICGC Christ Temple, East Bush Road.
It should be a heady mix–classical music, operatic performances, and just that dash of African cultural unity.
The spotlight for the night will, however, be on the fine Ghanaian music group, Lumina, known for its grand performance that fuses opera with traditional Ghanaian music. Just recently admitted into the prestigious American Institute of Musical Studies Opera Studio, Austria, Lumina will delight the audience with an uplifting blend of reimagined Ghanaian classics and operatic pop to give a new rendition of traditional sounds using world-class opera techniques.
Besides Lumina, two of South Africa’s most renowned opera vocalists, Tiego and Dorothy, will also appear on stage and combine their voices in what is going to be a fully captivating night of music. It is meant to create an experience that none will forget, bringing together European classical operatic traditions and African cultural expressions into one clear message of shared artistic unification for the African continent.
Before the concert, Amos George Tetteh, an Artistic Director from Lumina, provided insight into the creative vision of the group:
“We want to push boundaries with opera, reworking traditional pieces into modern expressions. In our collaborations with artists coming from a variety of genres, we‘re creating new forms of opera co-productions that just make it really exciting for an audience.”.
Accra Goes to Opera is more than a musical performance; it is a cultural venture to take classical music in Ghana to new and higher levels of appreciation and larger audiences. The concert is also the first in an annual series that will celebrate diverse interpretations of opera and classical music across Africa.
Equally, we are more excited to bring on board the local and international talent for the celebration of African unity through creative collaboration.” – Tetteh
Accra Goes to Opera nurtures an appreciation of opera in Ghana and gives a platform where artists from different walks of life come together and share the transformative power of music. As Accra prepares for this milestone event, it is about to be indelibly engraved in Ghana’s developing arts scene-a showcase of the timeless beauty of opera on its relevance to Ghanaian audiences.
