Adele doesn’t know when she’ll perform again after tearful Vegas goodbye

4 min read

Adele’s residency in Las Vegas came to a tearful end on Saturday night as she performed her 100th and final show at Caesars Palace. The British superstar had spent the past two years playing every Friday and Saturday at the 4,000-capacity venue, but as the final curtain fell, she expressed her sadness at the end of this chapter in her career. Throughout the residency, which had initially been delayed by a COVID outbreak and set delays, Adele regularly connected with fans but admitted that the emotional toll of such an extensive engagement had been draining.

In a heartfelt moment during her last show, Adele cried as she spoke to the audience, saying, “I’m so sad this residency is over but I am so glad that it happened, I really, really am. I will miss it terribly, I will miss you terribly. I don’t know when I next want to perform again.” These emotional words reflected the deep connection she had built with her fans during her time in Las Vegas.

Adele’s residency had been rescheduled from January 2022 after being postponed just a day before its original launch due to COVID-related issues. It was then rescheduled for later that year, and she performed on weekends for almost two years. Over that period, she created many memorable moments, such as when she became tearful after spotting Celine Dion in the audience. The two singers shared an emotional hug in the Colosseum Theatre, a venue built for Dion’s 2003 residency, where Adele was performing. Adele has long admired Dion, and Dion has also spoken highly of Adele’s talent, making their interaction even more poignant.

The singer, known for her chart-topping albums 19, 21, 25, and 30, also made headlines for her actions during her Vegas performances. At one concert, she famously defended a fan who had been told to sit down during a lively performance of Water Under the Bridge. When another audience member complained about the fan blocking their view, Adele intervened, telling the security guard to “leave him alone.” A video of the moment went viral, with the fan later posting it on TikTok, thanking Adele for standing up for him.

However, not all of Adele’s Vegas shows went smoothly. In June, she was caught in a heated exchange with an audience member who allegedly yelled “Pride sucks” during a performance. Adele fired back, scolding the person and urging them to “shut up” if they had nothing nice to say. It later emerged that the individual had actually shouted “work sucks,” which Adele had misheard, but she later admitted that she tends to get easily riled up, joking that she was now “old and grumpy.”

In July, Adele opened up about her emotional state and her decision to take a break from music after her residency. “My tank is quite empty at the minute,” she told German broadcaster ZDF. She revealed that she didn’t have any immediate plans to release new music and wanted to focus on other creative pursuits. “I want a big break after all this and I think I want to do other creative things just for a little while,” she said. Adele also shared that, despite being known for her powerful vocals, she never sings at home, adding, “How strange is that?”

One of the reasons Adele wants a break from music is due to her struggles with the fame that comes with it. Reflecting on her life before stardom, she admitted, “I miss everything about before I was famous, I think probably being anonymous the most.” While she acknowledged the privileges of making music and receiving appreciation for it, she confessed that the fame side of her career is something she finds difficult to cope with.

Adele’s planned career break has been a long time coming. In 2022, she mentioned her desire to pursue an English Literature degree once her Las Vegas residency ended. She explained during a fan Q&A in Los Angeles that if she hadn’t become a singer, she would have likely been an English literature teacher. Adele expressed a wish to study at university but noted that she plans to study online with a tutor instead. “That’s my plan for 2025, just to get the qualification,” she said.

As Adele bids farewell to her Vegas residency, her emotional goodbye signifies a moment of reflection and transition in her career. While her time in Las Vegas has come to an end, it appears that Adele is ready to take a step back from the limelight, focusing on personal growth and pursuing new creative opportunities away from the stage. Fans will undoubtedly look forward to her return, whenever that may be, as she takes time to recharge and explore other passions.
