BREAKING: Husband of Late Gospel Singer Osinachi Nwachukwu Sentenced to Death by Hanging

ABUJA, Nigeria —
In a landmark judgment delivered on Monday, April 28, Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Wuse Zone 2, sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late renowned gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.
Omega TV UK reports that Nwachukwu was found guilty of culpable homicide, following the death of his wife on April 8, 2022. The judge ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction of the defendant.
Peter Nwachukwu was first arraigned on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation on behalf of the Federal Government. He faced a 23-count charge, including culpable homicide punishable by death, criminal intimidation, spousal battery, and cruelty to children.
During the high-profile trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses — notably including two of the late Osinachi’s children — and submitted 25 documents into evidence. The defendant testified in his own defence, calling four witnesses and tendering four documents to support his case.
Prior to sentencing, Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for leniency in his client’s allocutus. However, the prosecution, led by Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to uphold the full weight of the law.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme ultimately handed down a death sentence by hanging on Count 1 (culpable homicide), alongside additional prison terms:

Two years imprisonment each on Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18;

Six months imprisonment on Count 10;

Three years imprisonment on Count 11;

Fines of ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 on Counts 6 and 7 respectively.
The death of Osinachi, famed for her powerful worship songs including the hit “Ekwueme,” sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stronger protections against domestic violence in Nigeria.
