Meeting favorite authors used to be a rare treat for readers, but this dynamic is shifting. With more authors embracing personal engagement, book launches and tours are becoming common, offering fans the chance to meet their literary idols, get books signed, and snap selfies. These events primarily aim to increase interest and sales, helping authors gain visibility and recognition in a crowded market.
While traditional book clubs provide a space for readers to share their experiences, “Conversations with the Author” (CWTA) stands out by creating an interactive platform for in-depth discussions. Readers are invited to ask questions and share personal reflections on how a particular story affected them, fostering a dialogue that enriches both author and audience. Authors, in turn, share insights into their writing processes, creating a deeper connection with their readers. At the conclusion of each session, attendees still have the opportunity to purchase books and engage in casual conversations, leaving with a strengthened sense of belonging to the literary community.
Recognized as Africa’s largest theatre, the South African State Theatre embraces various artistic expressions, including performing arts and entertainment. It is within this vibrant context that CWTA was born. Dr. Sibongiseni Mkhize, CEO of the institution, explained that the initiative emerged during a project aimed at enhancing the theatre’s infrastructure and artistic offerings.
“Given the theatre’s stature and diverse artistic presentations, it was crucial to invest in publications and the recognition of authors as part of our theatre’s value chain,” Mkhize stated. He noted that many productions originate as scripts from published works, emphasizing CWTA’s goal to position the theatre as a hub for African intellectual thought.
Mkhize articulated the vision to align the literary programme with the theatre’s core activities, moving it from the periphery to the center. By referring to the initiative as “Conversations with the Author,” the theatre creates a space that goes beyond standard book launches, allowing for deeper exploration of the authors’ journeys in writing, knowledge production, and contributions to critical scholarship.
Since its inception in 2022, CWTA has been hosted by Tebogo Ditinti, who has engaged with over 30 writers. Ditinti describes her role as one of the most fulfilling experiences of her life. As a dedicated reader, she relishes the opportunity to make literature a focal point of her work. With her inviting demeanor, Ditinti fosters an interactive environment where audiences feel comfortable and engaged, gaining valuable insights into the literary landscape.
Prominent authors such as Professor Zakes Mda, Dr. Siphiwo Mahala, and Sue Nyathi have graced the CWTA stage, each bringing unique perspectives that enrich the discussions. Ditinti acknowledges the distinctive contributions of each writer, emphasizing the value they add to the series.
Recently, the South African State Theatre announced an upcoming milestone for CWTA, set to feature award-winning author Jackie Phamotse on November 9, 2024. Phamotse, known for her books “Bare” and “Hockey Club,” will be the first author to fill the Malombo Theatre, one of the venue’s most popular spaces. Ditinti shared her enthusiasm about this event, noting that Phamotse will engage the audience on her latest work, “The Tea Merchant.” This event marks the 37th author to be featured in CWTA, highlighting the initiative’s ongoing success.
CWTA has also opened doors for the theatre’s artistic director to explore books suitable for adaptation into performances. As episodes are recorded, the theatre is also enhancing its online presence and digital content in preparation for the launch of SAST TV, set to debut before the end of the year.
Through initiatives like CWTA, the South African State Theatre is creating a vibrant literary community that not only celebrates authors but also deepens readers’ engagement with literature. By fostering these conversations, the theatre helps to elevate African voices and stories, positioning itself as a key player in the cultural landscape.
