Cameron Diaz is in for ‘The Mask’ sequel if Jim Carrey is on board

4 min read

Cameron Diaz is open to the idea of reprising her role in a sequel to the 1994 hit film The Mask if Jim Carrey is involved. In a recent interview with Access Hollywood to promote her new Netflix film Back In Action, where she stars alongside Jamie Foxx, Diaz expressed her willingness to return to the role that helped launch her career, but only if Carrey, who played the lead role of Stanley Ipkis, is on board.

“If Jim’s on board,” Diaz stated, referring to Carrey’s potential involvement in the sequel. “I’ve been riding those coattails from day one.” The 1994 film, directed by Chuck Russell, starred Carrey as Stanley Ipkis, a shy, mild-mannered bank teller who discovers a magical mask that transforms him into a zany and confident figure. Diaz played Tina Carlyle, a nightclub singer who becomes Ipkis’s love interest. The film was both a commercial and critical success, and it marked Diaz’s breakout role in Hollywood.

Carrey himself has expressed interest in returning for a sequel, though only under the right circumstances. In a December 2024 interview with Comicbook.com, Carrey said he would be open to reprising his iconic role, but emphasized that the key to his return would be a compelling and creative idea. “If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things,” he said. “I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just – things tend to change.” Carrey’s openness to returning to The Mask shows that while he’s taken a step back from acting in recent years, the right project could bring him back to the big screen.

Diaz’s willingness to join a The Mask sequel is part of her larger return to acting after a long break. The actress took a hiatus from the industry after her last major role in 2014’s Annie but made her return with Back In Action in 2024, which marks her first film in nearly a decade. In the Netflix movie, she stars alongside Jamie Foxx, and their dynamic has received positive feedback. Diaz shared that she is ready to take on more roles now that she is back in action. “I’ve been in retirement for a long time, but now I feel ready to work again,” Diaz said, reflecting on her hiatus.

Cameron Diaz is open to starring in a The Mask sequel and revisiting Charlie’s Angels if Jim Carrey and her co-stars are involved, following her return to acting in Back In Action on Netflix.

Aside from a potential The Mask sequel, Diaz is also open to returning to other past hits, such as Charlie’s Angels, the 2000 action-comedy film in which she starred alongside Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. When asked about revisiting the Charlie’s Angels franchise, Diaz playfully said, “I’m gonna text [Lucy Liu] right now and pitch her Jamie [Foxx] as Bosley [one of the character’s roles].” The prospect of a Charlie’s Angels reunion has excited fans, as the original film and its 2003 sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, were box office successes and cemented Diaz, Liu, and Barrymore as a beloved trio in Hollywood.

In Back In Action, Diaz’s reunion with Jamie Foxx has proven to be a highlight for viewers, and it appears that the actress is interested in reuniting with her former costars in future projects. Diaz’s comments have fueled speculation about a potential Charlie’s Angels revival, and the idea of bringing back the beloved trio, along with a new character such as Foxx’s Bosley, has garnered interest.

As for The Mask sequel, Diaz’s comments indicate that the film could be a possibility if the right creative team comes together. Carrey’s willingness to return, combined with Diaz’s enthusiasm, could pave the way for a long-awaited sequel that would reunite the beloved duo. However, with Carrey’s emphasis on the importance of the right idea, it seems that any potential The Mask sequel would need to have a compelling script to truly capture the magic of the original.

Fans of The Mask and Charlie’s Angels will undoubtedly be watching closely to see if these iconic films are revisited. Diaz’s return to acting, along with her willingness to collaborate with her former costars, has reignited excitement among moviegoers. For now, Back In Action is streaming on Netflix, and audiences can enjoy Diaz’s return to the big screen while awaiting news about potential future projects.
