Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan is preparing to bring a legendary tale to life with his upcoming adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. Universal Pictures revealed this week that Nolan will helm a cinematic retelling of the ancient Greek epic, which follows the long and perilous journey of the hero Odysseus as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War.

The Odyssey, believed to have been written by Homer between 750 and 650 BCE, is one of the most influential works in Western literature. The poem tells the story of Odysseus’ 10-year struggle to return to Ithaca, encountering mythical creatures, gods, and trials along the way. Nolan’s adaptation is set to be a “mythic action epic” filmed across various global locations. The director plans to employ cutting-edge IMAX film technology to bring the ancient world to life on the big screen in a way never seen before.

The star-studded cast of The Odyssey includes Zendaya, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Matt Damon, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron. These actors, many of whom have worked with Nolan in the past, bring considerable star power to the project. Holland, best known for his role as Spider-Man, spoke about the film during an appearance on The Dish podcast last week. He revealed that while production has yet to begin, he had a brief meeting with Nolan where the director gave him a “loose pitch” for the project. However, Holland still doesn’t know many of the details, adding an air of mystery to the film’s production.

Holland also joked about the prospect of working alongside his girlfriend, Zendaya, who is also cast in the film. He quipped that “studios love it” when the couple is on the same project, as it means they only need “one hotel room.” This playful comment only adds to the excitement surrounding the film, particularly given the chemistry between the two stars in their previous work together.

Several of the actors in Nolan’s ensemble have appeared in his previous films, including Tenet, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer. Pattinson, Damon, and Hathaway have worked with Nolan on past projects, with Damon and Hathaway both starring in Interstellar and Pattinson appearing in Tenet. Nolan’s films have become known for their intellectual complexity, stunning visuals, and action-packed storytelling, and The Odyssey promises to follow in that tradition.

The director is no stranger to tackling epic narratives, having previously helmed some of Hollywood’s most ambitious films. His filmography includes iconic works such as Inception, The Dark Knight trilogy, Dunkirk, and most recently, Oppenheimer. The latter was a major success, winning several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and earning Nolan his first Oscar for Best Director as a producer.

Universal’s announcement highlighted that The Odyssey will mark the first time Homer’s classic tale is brought to IMAX film screens. The film will immerse audiences in the epic story, offering a visually stunning experience that Nolan’s fans have come to expect. With its grand scale and cutting-edge technology, the film is expected to set a new standard for historical and mythological adaptations.

The Odyssey is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026. As anticipation builds, fans of Nolan’s work are eager to see how he will bring Homer’s mythic story to life, weaving together an all-star cast and groundbreaking technology to create a cinematic masterpiece that could be one of the most talked-about films of the decade. With Nolan at the helm, The Odyssey is bound to be an unforgettable experience for moviegoers around the world.
