Elton John album on hold because he ‘can’t see’
3 min readSir Elton John has revealed that his upcoming album is on hold due to ongoing vision problems, which have left him struggling to complete the project. The legendary musician has been unable to see properly out of his right eye for the past four months following an infection he contracted in July. He also shared that his left eye is in poor condition, making it difficult for him to work in the studio.
In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America, Elton described the challenges he’s facing. “I can do something like this [an interview], but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for a start,” he explained. He added that he was unable to read, watch anything, or see clearly, which has deeply impacted his ability to work. “It kind of floored me,” he said, reflecting on the struggle of losing his sight.
When asked about the progress of his new album, Elton admitted that he was unsure when it would be finished. “It’s been a while since I’ve done anything, and I’m kind of stuck at the moment,” he said, acknowledging the difficulty of being unable to work due to his vision issues. However, he expressed hope for recovery, stating that he is undergoing treatment and remains optimistic. “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK,” he said, emphasizing that his primary focus at the moment is on his health.
Elton John had previously mentioned in November 2023, during his speech at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, that he had just finished recording a new album with his longtime collaborator, lyricist Bernie Taupin. At the time, he described the album as “absolutely wonderful,” filled with “youth and vitality.” Despite this, the Good Morning America interview reveals that the album’s release is still far from certain. The pop star’s last studio album of new material, Wonderful Crazy Night, was released in 2016, making this next project highly anticipated by fans. However, with Elton still struggling with his eyesight, it appears the album will not be completed anytime soon.
The singer’s ongoing vision issues stemmed from a “severe” infection, which he had revealed in August had left him with “only limited vision” in one eye. Despite these health challenges, Sir Elton has continued to make public appearances. He attended the premieres of his documentary Never Too Late in both Toronto and London, demonstrating that he hasn’t let his eyesight issues entirely prevent him from being in the public eye. Additionally, in October, Elton joined singer Dua Lipa on stage at the Royal Albert Hall to perform their hit song Cold Heart, further showing his determination to stay involved in music despite his struggles.
In addition to his musical performances, Elton was also seen at the opening of his Broadway musical Tammy Faye earlier this month, and he appeared at the Royal Variety Performance in London, where he introduced a song from another new stage production, The Devil Wears Prada. These appearances highlight Elton’s resilience in continuing his career, even as he faces health setbacks.
Despite the challenges he’s encountered, Elton remains focused on his recovery and the hope that his vision will improve. While it’s unclear when he will be able to complete his album, the legendary artist continues to inspire fans with his perseverance and commitment to his music and performances. As he works on his health, fans can only wait with anticipation for the eventual release of his new work when the time is right.
