Eva Longoria is garnering recognition for her crucial contribution to the “John Wick” franchise, acknowledging that she initially underestimated the impact of her involvement. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Longoria revealed how her investment helped get the 2014 blockbuster off the ground when its budget fell short.
Co-director Chad Stahelski shared insights into the film’s financial struggles, highlighting that both he and co-director David Leitch, along with star Keanu Reeves, had put their own money into the project. Producer Basil Iwanyk had also reached his financial limits, maxing out three credit cards to help bring the revenge-action film to life.
Longoria’s pivotal role came just in time. Stahelski explained that she provided essential gap financing less than 24 hours before the production faced a standstill. “She literally came to the rescue,” he said, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. The talent agency CAA, which was organizing financing, had approached some clients, including Longoria, with an opportunity to invest.
In retrospect, Longoria reflected on her entry into film financing: “My bankroll was very new, and it was a lot of money, and I was like, ‘So how does it work?’ I had no idea.” She humorously admitted, “I would love to say I was an investment genius and I just knew and calculated my risk. No, none of that.”
Longoria recounted how she was approached by an agent—who wasn’t even her own—urging her to consider the investment. “He called me and said, ‘You got money, you should put your money here,’” she recalled. At that time, she was unfamiliar with film financing terms and concepts. “I didn’t even know how a movie was made,” she said, expressing her confusion about terms like “gap financing.”
This experience sparked a newfound passion in Longoria, leading her to pursue producing multiple projects in the entertainment industry. She acknowledged that her involvement in “John Wick” opened doors to opportunities she had not previously considered.
Longoria continues to reap the financial benefits of her initial investment in the franchise. “My husband is friends with the head of Lionsgate, and he’ll say to him sometimes, ‘I see we wrote a check to Eva this week,’” she shared, demonstrating the ongoing success of the film and her part in it. However, she remains humble about her role, stating, “The geniuses were Chad and David and the star that was Keanu. I just wrote the check.”
Despite her initial lack of experience in film production, Longoria’s journey reflects a broader narrative of empowerment and opportunity in Hollywood. Her story serves as a reminder that sometimes, taking a leap of faith can lead to unexpected successes. Since her involvement in “John Wick,” Longoria has expanded her career to include various producing roles, further establishing her presence in the industry.
As the “John Wick” franchise continues to thrive, with subsequent films and a dedicated fan base, Longoria’s investment has proven to be more than just a financial decision; it has transformed into a significant part of her professional legacy. Through her journey, she emphasizes the importance of stepping outside one’s comfort zone and seizing opportunities, no matter how daunting they may seem.
Longoria’s experience illustrates how a willingness to learn and adapt can lead to success, even in unfamiliar territory. As she continues to navigate her career in Hollywood, her story serves as an inspiration for others looking to make their mark in the entertainment industry.
