David Hasselhoff has paid heartfelt tribute to his late Baywatch co-star, Michael Newman, who passed away at the age of 68. In a touching Instagram post, Hasselhoff shared that Newman, a real-life lifeguard as well as an actor, “saved my life at least four times” during the filming of the iconic 1990s series.
Hasselhoff, known for his role as Mitch Buchannon, was one of the few cast members to appear in more episodes than Newman, who portrayed the character of a lifeguard. Newman’s passing follows an eight-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, a condition he faced with remarkable courage.
In his tribute, Hasselhoff reflected on their time together, posting a picture of the two alongside a heartfelt message. “Newman was a warrior… he literally saved my life at least four times,” he wrote. He recounted specific moments, such as Newman’s seamless transfer from a speedboat to jet skis, showcasing his exceptional skills. “What an amazing man. He was never afraid of the water. I remember directing him in a few episodes, and he was really good. He became a great actor. We will all miss him,” Hasselhoff added.
Jeremy Jackson, who played Mitch’s son Hobie, also expressed his sorrow over Newman’s passing. In his own tribute, he described how fortunate and honored he felt to have crossed paths with Newman. He labeled him a “true leader,” affirming that “there will never ever be another warrior like this.”
Newman’s death was confirmed by filmmaker Matthew Felker, a friend who had recently directed a docuseries titled After Baywatch: Moment In The Sun. In his tribute, Felker noted, “Few of us are lucky enough to have someone like Mike Newman enter and change their life.” He shared a poignant moment from just days before Newman’s passing when he joked about Felker’s visit being “just in time.” “That was Mike—he found humor all the way until the end,” Felker reflected.
Gena Lee Nolin, who played Neely Capshaw in Baywatch, also mourned Newman’s loss, commenting on Felker’s tribute. “Rest in Peace, Newmie. He will be remembered and greatly missed by so many. One of the good ones through and through,” she wrote, highlighting the profound impact Newman had on those around him.
In addition to his work on Baywatch, where he juggled filming with a full-time career as a firefighter, Newman appeared in several spin-offs, including Baywatch Hawaii, Baywatch: White Thunder At Glacier Bay, and Baywatch Nights. Although he did not pursue many other acting roles, he did feature in the 1999 film Enemy Action alongside C. Thomas Howell and Louis Mandylor.
In his later years, Newman dedicated himself to advocacy work, collaborating with the Michael J. Fox Foundation to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. His efforts in raising awareness about the condition showcased his resilient spirit, further solidifying his legacy.
As tributes continue to pour in from friends, colleagues, and fans alike, it is clear that Michael Newman was more than just an actor; he was a beloved friend, a heroic lifeguard, and a source of inspiration for many. His contributions to the Baywatch franchise and his unwavering spirit in the face of adversity will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
David Hasselhoff’s heartfelt reflections serve as a reminder of the deep bonds forged on set and the lasting impact of true friendship. As the Baywatch family mourns the loss of Newman, they also celebrate a life filled with bravery, humor, and unwavering commitment to helping others.
