‘He changed my life’: Stars remember Quincy Jones

Following the passing of legendary musician and producer Quincy Jones at the age of 91, tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry, politics, and beyond, highlighting his profound impact on music, culture, and those fortunate enough to know him. From Oprah Winfrey to Barack Obama, Quincy’s influence as a mentor, friend, and visionary is reflected in the heartfelt messages from some of the biggest names in music and entertainment.

In an emotional tribute to the late icon, Stevie Wonder, who worked with Jones on numerous projects including the iconic We Are the World charity single, described the loss as “more than heartbreaking.” Wonder praised Quincy as “one of God’s greatest gifts to the world” and highlighted his devotion to the art of music. “Quincy was motivated by the idea of giving and getting the best—not for the money, just for the art of it,” Wonder wrote. He added, “You can look back and hear all of that when you hear his music.”

Oprah Winfrey, who described Quincy as a transformational figure in her life, said, “My life changed forever for the better” after meeting him. She described Quincy as “love lived out loud in human form,” noting his unique ability to treat everyone he met as if they were the most important person in the room. She continued, “He was the Mightiest of Souls… His life enhanced mine and every life he touched. That will be his global legacy.”

Sir Paul McCartney, a longtime friend and collaborator, paid tribute to Jones by recalling their many joyful moments together. “He always had a twinkle in his eye and a very positive, loving spirit,” McCartney wrote. “His long career stretches back to the early days when he was a trumpet player, then a band leader, then a producer of many great records.” For Sir Paul, it was not just Quincy’s legendary music career but his personal warmth and generosity that stood out. “We always had fun in his presence, and his legend will continue through the years,” McCartney reflected.

Quincy’s remarkable career spanned decades and included collaborations with musical giants like Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, and Ray Charles. He produced more than 50 film and TV soundtracks, including The Color Purple, which launched Oprah’s career. Jones’ ability to nurture new talent was also a key part of his legacy. Will Smith, who starred in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which Quincy co-produced, wrote that Jones “pointed me toward the greatest parts of myself,” adding, “He inspired me, checked me when he needed to, and let me use his wings until mine were strong enough to fly.”

Similarly, Justin Timberlake, who grew up listening to Quincy’s timeless works, called him “a once in a lifetime artist” and thanked him for his mentorship.

Pharrell Williams hailed Jones as “The Greatest Of All Time,” while U2’s Bono joked that Quincy’s spirit would make the music in heaven “a little more melodic, a little more interesting harmonically, and certainly more rhythmic.” Other musicians like Wyclef Jean, Barbra Streisand, and Jacob Collier also expressed their admiration for Jones’ artistry and personal influence.

In addition to his musical legacy, Quincy’s impact extended into the political realm. Former U.S. President Barack Obama shared a tribute, acknowledging Quincy’s ability to “bridge divides” with his music and his leadership in breaking barriers for Black executives in the entertainment industry. “By building a career that took him from the streets of Chicago to the heights of Hollywood, Quincy paved the way for generations of Black executives to leave their mark on the entertainment business,” Obama said.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who called Quincy a “trailblazer,” praised his commitment to lifting others up and opening doors for those who came after him. “He lived his life unapologetically,” she wrote. “He broke down barriers and opened doors for those who came after him, not for praise, but because he knew the power of our shared potential.”

Jones’ daughter, Martina, shared an emotional message about her father, calling him “my friend, my solid, my guidance, and my inspiration of what love looks like.” She expressed the deep impact he had on the world, adding, “Thank you for loving me and being the best Dad.”
