J. Cole has thrown his voice into the long-standing Drake-Kendrick Lamar beef with a new song titled “Port Antonio.”
The song-which dropped Wednesday, October 9-speaks to the tension between the two rap giants and offers Cole’s perspective in regard to what went down. Over the soulful instrumental, he looks inwards at his own journey into the music industry and the effect of the beef on his relationships.
The North Carolina rapper says he stepped away from the beef, as it could very well ruin friendships. He also says he feels let down with the way things went down regarding the beef, and how unity and collaboration in the hip-hop game should be number one.
“They wanted blood, they wanted clicks to make they pockets grow,” Cole raps. “They see this fire in my pen and think I’m dodgin’ smoke/ I wouldn’t have lost a battle, dawg, I woulda lost a bro/ I woulda gained a foe.”
He also speaks to Drake directly, highlighting their close relationship and the influence Drake has had on his career. He encourages both Drake and Kendrick to take the focus off controversy and back onto the music.
“Reminding these folks why we do it,” Cole says. “It’s not for beefing, it’s for speaking our thoughts/ Pushing ourselves, reaching the charts/ Reaching your minds, deep in your heart/ Screaming to find emotions to touch/ Somethin’ inside to open you up/ Help you cope with the rough times and sht/ I’m sending love, ’cause we ain’t promised sht.”
“Port Antonio” is a pivotal moment in the saga that has been going on between Drake and Kendrick Lamar for quite some time. What the two do next is anyone’s guess, but this track seems to offer a different spin on the event and an olive branch toward peace and brotherhood in the hip-hop world.
