Liam Payne cause of death confirmed as polytrauma

3 min read

The cause of death for singer Liam Payne, former member of the popular boyband One Direction, has been officially confirmed as “polytrauma” by a UK inquest. Payne, 31, tragically passed away on October 16 after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Polytrauma refers to a condition where a person suffers multiple traumatic injuries affecting different parts of the body and its organ systems. The confirmation came during an inquest hearing held at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court on December 17. At that time, it was revealed that the investigation into the circumstances of Payne’s death was still ongoing, and it would take some time before the full details of his passing could be confirmed.

The inquest hearing, which was adjourned until a pre-inquest review scheduled for November 6, provided insight into the challenges investigators faced. Senior Coroner Crispin Butler stated that while investigations were taking place in Argentina regarding Payne’s death, there were complexities in obtaining the necessary information. He noted that the process of securing the relevant details from Argentina, particularly through the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, could be lengthy.

As the investigation into Payne’s death continues, five individuals in Argentina have been charged in connection with the incident. These include the hotel’s manager, Gilda Martin, and its receptionist, Esteban Grassi, who have been charged with manslaughter. Payne’s friend, Roger Nores, is also facing similar charges, while two other individuals, Ezequiel Pereyra, a hotel worker, and Braian Paiz, a waiter, have been charged with supplying drugs.

In addition to the ongoing legal proceedings, toxicology tests conducted by the prosecutor’s office in Argentina revealed traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s system at the time of his death. A post-mortem examination later determined that Payne’s cause of death was “multiple trauma” due to the fall, along with “internal and external hemorrhaging.” Medical reports indicated that Payne may have fallen while in a state of semi-consciousness or total unconsciousness, suggesting that he was not aware of his actions or the danger he was in when the fall occurred. This finding ruled out the possibility that the fall was a conscious or voluntary act.

Payne’s sudden passing shocked fans and the music community, as he was a prominent figure in pop music following his rise to fame with One Direction. The group achieved worldwide success after appearing on The X Factor and became one of the most beloved boybands of the 2010s. However, One Direction went on an indefinite hiatus in January 2016, and Payne had since pursued a solo career.

In the wake of his death, the singer’s family, friends, and former bandmates paid tribute to him. Payne’s funeral was held in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, in November, where his One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik attended. Also present were Payne’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, and his former partner, Cheryl, with whom he shared a son. The service was a poignant moment for those who knew him personally and professionally, and many mourned the loss of a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.

The investigation into Liam Payne’s tragic death continues, with legal authorities in both the UK and Argentina working to piece together the full circumstances surrounding the incident. As more information emerges, it is hoped that the details of his death will be clarified and that justice will be served for the loss of a talented and cherished artist.
