Withers had a prolific career in television during the 1980s, making notable appearances in popular shows such as Matlock, Magnum P.I., The Dukes of Hazzard, Dallas, and L.A. Law. However, it was his portrayal of Ted Dinard, the boyfriend and confidante to Steven Carrington in Dynasty (1981), that brought him widespread recognition. The role of Ted was groundbreaking, as it marked one of the first portrayals of an LGBTQ+ character in a major American TV drama during that time. Withers’ portrayal was praised for its authenticity and was described by him as “30, 40 years ahead of its time.” He recalled that the Dynasty creators were ahead of their time in showcasing a genuine and respectful gay relationship, without turning it into a scandal or source of humor.
In addition to his work on Dynasty, Withers’ career included many other significant television roles, including as coroner Gary in Stranger Things (2016). He also appeared in Days of Our Lives as Coach Locke, Frasier, Criminal Minds, Sense8, Castle, and Drop Dead Diva. His diverse roles across different genres showed his range and ability to bring warmth, humor, and depth to every character he played.

She praised his remarkable ability to leave a lasting impression in every role and spoke of his unwavering dedication to his craft. Jessie added that her father’s enduring legacy would be remembered fondly by colleagues, friends, and fans.
